Thistle bed on the gravely land by the river just buzzing, meadow browns and tortoiseshells on the flowers, brown hawkers dragonflies quartering , and many flies visiting too

@Roger_TL45Y @BSBI_Ireland @ODowdsSeafood In West Galway and West Clare it tends to grow in pretty exposed coastal areas, mainly along roadsides without any supporting veg.

Babington's Leek, Allium ampeloprasum var. babingtonii, flowers & bulbils in garden where it relies on Hollyhock for support. Shown to Babington on islands off #Roundstone #Connemara by son of the hotel keeper, 1835. Surely it grows unsupported there? Any local knowledge? 🤔😉

@phoebeob1 @GrasslandsIrl I have seen the species dominating some upland flushes in the Comeragh mountains. Definitely one to monitor.

The only slight problem in the grassland at @GrasslandsIrl training day. Innocent perhaps but larger numbers than you'd think. Got me rethinking

@FernandezNature @BlackthornEcol @LIFEraisedbogs @npwsBioData @Bryospod Appears to favour marginal tear pool areas in some raised bogs such as Carn Park, but also seen in very nice wet and intact blanket bogs in Mayo.

@Bryospod The high water mark extends into the woodland behind which is almost 100% Crataegus with Cinclidotus covered trunks.

@JohnConaghan6 With lots of dark Cinclidotus covering the boulders - is that the high water level?

Anyone ever come across Fir Clubmoss on a lowland raised bog? I thought they were restricted to uplands on shallow peats. Found this one single plant on Frosses Bog yesterday @IUCNpeat @ypp_peat @welshraisedbog @PeatlandACTION @PeatlandsG

Spotted a nice morel on my travels today.

@FionaHo07708103 A tricky one. Carex pendula is considered a recent introduction in some Irish vice-counties and can be very invasive in areas of damp/disturbed soil. I would keep and eye on it.

This morning I scrambled through the hawthorns to face up to this fatally ignored bit of our land. The huge grasses in front are (I think) African fountain grass. A menace. I will have to recruit my husband to dig them out. Montbretia in the background🙄
