The cinematography sucks. I'm glad I didn't drive an hour to the nearest Imax theater and pay extra for a ticket because the movie doesn't benefit from being shot on 70mm film at all. Almost all of it was shot with a shallow depth of field, so at any given time, only a tiny sliver of the frame is in focus, and in a lot of shots, the thing that's supposed to be in focus is out of focus. Yes, they actually misfocused in more than a handful of shots. If you look at a movie like Lawrence of Arabia, where most of it was shot with deep focus and you get a lot of wide landscape shots, it really benefits from the large format. The Odyssey is noting like that. It reminds me of Army of the Dead. And a lot of it is shot up close and handheld. Pair this with terrible editing, and you get the sense that everything was shot "for coverage" like a Marvel movie, where instead of carefully planning everything, they just film from as many angles as possible and pick whatever works in post and cut to random close-ups to avoid showing jump cuts where they spliced multiple takes together.
