Sad to learn that my journalist colleague John Roberts has left us at the age of 84. We were together on the Daily Express in the 1960s before John joined The Guardian and then became The Independent's highly respected tennis correspondent. Condolences to Phyllis and her family.

Football has lost a fine servant and a great guy with the passing of Roly Howard at 90. He managed Marine FC for a world record 33 years and 1,975 games from August 1972 to April 2005 and also found time to be a window cleaner ! RIP Roly.

Very saddened by the loss of my great friend Dave Shields. He was an esteemed member of our Southport Thursday Club and a superb road manager for our football stage shows, including "The Bill Shankly Story" and "Kendall's Kings", which we staged in 5 countries. RIP Dave.

Very saddened by the passing of my friend Tony Ensor. Tony was a former Liverpool FC director and club solicitor and a highly respected lawyer in several roles. Condolences to his wife Jenny and family.

Sad at Denis Law's passing. Developed at Huddersfield under Bill Shankly he starred with both Manchester clubs, Torino and Scotland and he sits with fellow legend Sir Kenny Dalglish as 30-goal joint top Scotland scorers. I worked with Denis a couple of times and a great guy.
