The kauri trees of New Zealand lived through the age of dinosaurs and are still growing. Agathis australis has been on Earth for approximately 190 million years. Living specimens can reach 60 meters tall and 16 meters in circumference. Their trunks are silver-grey and utterly straight, rising without branches for much of their height before opening into a dense rounded canopy. The oldest known living kauri, Tane Mahuta, is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old. In Māori tradition, Tane Mahuta is the Lord of the Forest, a divine being who separated earth and sky. The tree is sacred, and visiting it is not casual. It stands in the Waipoua Forest in Northland, and the people who care for it are considered its guardians, not its managers. The kauri is now threatened by a fungal disease called kauri dieback, Phytophthora agathidicola, for which there is no cure. It spreads through contaminated soil on boots, tools, and vehicles. Visiting areas with kauri in New Zealand now requires boot-washing stations, track closures, and strict biosecurity.
