I wish Vimeo wouldn't put "Video doesn't exist" on all our videos instead of "Vimeo is down" -- like our customers think we deleted our videos!

My current favorite videos on YT are from the 'Predictable Designs' channel, by @JohnTeelEE, where engineers participate in a timed circuit board design. I'll try to host a hackathon of one of those in Nairobi sometime in the future. For now, #RutoMustGo.

It is sufficient if something that uses a technique that is very comparable to your invention has already been created, demonstrated, or described by someone, somewhere, at some point in the past.

Simply put, any idea or concept that already exists constitutes prior art and cannot be patented. Prior art is evidence that the "novel" invention you thought of is in fact already well-known.

If you are thinking about getting a provisional or utility patent, you want to first conduct a prior art search. But what exactly is "prior art" and how is it related to getting a patent for a product idea?

The USPTO has authorized a network of public, state, and university libraries around the country to serve as Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRCs), which assist users in doing patent and trademark searches. There are locations in every state.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website is the place to conduct a deeper search. You simply use the main search bar at the top right of their homepage. You can also get free, in-person help with your search.

Invention promotion companies like InventHelp charge a lot of money to conduct patent searches. This is an important early step for startups and inventors, but you can actually do a patent search yourself, and for free.
