@SandyofCthulhu As a former gaming journo, I can confirm that most of my colleagues got into those roles because they love games and had no interest in being duplicitous. It's the management that corrupts the process. They pressure writers to give certain scores, change their conclusions, etc.

Video game journalists have always been mostly scum. When I was at MicroProse (1988-1993) gaming magazines would literally phone us and ask for bribes for reviews. By the end of the 90s, they covered it very slightly by saying something like, "We're planning to review Age of Empires 2 in September. Would you like to purchase a full-age ad in our magazine?" hinting broadly that failure results in a crappier review. If you want to get video reviews, get them from people who play the WHOLE GAME, and who grew from fandom, like Sophia Narwitz and Josh Strife Hayes. Not the usual suspects.
