Dan Sherman, father of fallen Israeli hostage and IDF soldier, Ron Sherman, writes the following: "I’m writing this post because I have no choice. Out of despair. A year and a half ago, I prepared a Wikipedia article about Ron. I thought it would be a good way to commemorate him. I wrote the entire entry with zero prior knowledge. Hours upon hours of work, over several days, from morning to night. But I was excited, because I realized Ron would finally have his own article after everything he’d been through — and rightfully so. One day after the article went up, it disappeared. The claim made by the Wikipedia editors was: “We do not discriminate between one person’s blood and another’s,” and “We do not write entries about soldiers.” What? There are so many entries about soldiers who were kidnapped or killed. Even Tamir Nimrodi, z”l, who was kidnapped with Ron, received an article — and rightfully so. But Ron is not being allowed one. After I was denied, I spent many long hours preparing a new article, one that—so I was told—would be accepted: “The kidnapping of the three soldiers from the Gaza border.” The entry included Ron, Tamir Nimrodi, and Nick Beiser, z”l, who were kidnapped together, and thus properly covered the event without leaving anyone behind. But within minutes, the article vanished as if it never existed. This time, the claim was: “October 7 is a major event, not a private one. There are people who will not receive articles written about them, and it would not be fair to them.” Ron Sherman, a soldier spoken about across all news channels worldwide, whose signs people held up in every country, is not being granted a Wikipedia article — unlike other soldiers and victims of October 7 who have received one. After long conversations with Wikipedia editors, I am turning here, because I have nowhere else to turn, to anyone who reads this — hoping it reaches the right people. People who can ensure that the entry I prepared, which I still have, will finally be published, so that Ron will receive proper commemoration. People need to know his story. He could have been any one of us. This stance taken by Wikipedia contradicts my values and the values of my country. I am not willing to give up on this, for Ron. It hurts me." @MayanShermanMVD
