@BarbaraBleiman @JayKloppenberg @tes @jon_severs No school discourages ‘reading for pleasure’. But what cannot happen is schools adopting ‘DEAR’ practices instead of targeted interventions for poor readers. They’re not, & shouldn’t be, mutually exclusive things, but part of a school culture of reading.

Should schools stop focusing on reading for pleasure? The widely held belief that the strategy improves attainment has been called into question by research, finds @jon_severs tes.com/magazine/teach…

@SecondaryEng This student is clearly bright, but this type of loose context should really be built on a solid, text-based analytical point, no?

@blgtylr Wait until the post-structuralists arrive, and you’re in someone’s kitchen at 4am, bleary eyed, talking about a malaise of overlapping discourses.

@atptour @AlexZverev Imagine if Zverev stepped in and did that more often instead of pushing everything to infinity and losing in 3 sets.

@Lit_liverbird @GCSE_Macbeth I never said they were, each student should always be seen individually. PP students are statistically, on average, vulnerable to attainment gaps & seating pupils via potential for progress (instead of JUST behaviour) is one way to potentially combat this.

What's best practice for making a seating plan for a mixed ability class? Academic like with like? Mismatched pairs? Seat for behaviour only?

@OasisArchives @oasis 1. Go Let It Out 2. Stop Crying 3. Little by Little 4. Let There Be Love 5. Falling Down Noel should not have relinquished songwriting to Andy and Gem and been braver with branching out, as a lot of the post 2000s album songs are just pure filler.

Love this new 100% Sheet crafted by Miss Birch @FrieslandSchool and her team. The aim here is to explore layers of meaning and the first pieces of scholar work are exceptional. #SmashingIt

@GCSE_Macbeth Mainly years of reading exam reports, marking essays and noting the errors that students often fall foul of and trying to frontload them early in the course. I think organisation is a huge issue, structuring an argument (so modelling how to think and plan).

Ideas please! What strategies / pedagogies / approaches have been successful for A-Level Literature? Especially for raising students who maybe weren't top performers at GCSE.

@Big3Tennis Much rather play Sinner. Djokovic losing three Wimbledon finals in a row to Alcaraz would be some feat: Novak would be Olympics-style motivated.

I have two copies of The Visualiser Handbook to give away. This is for busy teachers who need concise clarity to make live modelling an effect part of their practice ASAP. To enter, follow, like and retweet this post and I will draw winners at random on the 18th July.

@BarbaraBleiman None of these things are ‘bad’ in themselves, but they’ve lethally mutated thanks to the demands of GCSEs. KS3 should he kept entirely separate. However, prioritising knowledge acquisition & embedding an understanding of literary culture is crucial.

Barbara Bleiman 🎓 Education is Conversation
Who else is concerned that formative assessment, end of unit tests & data drops are damaging learning at KS3? They end up shrinking what's taught to what can be assessed. In English this is a v big problem. If it isn't in the written assessment, it's seen as a naughty diversion.

@BarclayCard18 It was after that Rome Masters win in 2017 against Djokovic. You could see the look on his face at the end, like, ‘Of course this was going to happen.’ Hubris and pride leading to a fall: shock horror.
