He argued that comparing AI training costs to human queries is "unfair" because it takes 20 years and all the food you eat to train a human, plus "the very widespread evolution of the 100 billion people that have ever lived." My Take I don't even know what to do with the evolution argument. Humans are already here. We're not choosing between training an AI model and evolving a new species. It's the kind of thing that sounds profound if you don't think about it for more than five seconds. If the energy and water numbers were actually good, OpenAI would publish them. They don't, so researchers have to estimate independently, and when those estimates look bad, Altman calls them "totally insane" without providing counter-evidence. Meanwhile we're watching data centers drive up electricity prices for households, pull electricians away from housing construction, and consume resources across the economy. His answer is that society needs to build more nuclear and renewables faster. Not that OpenAI should slow down, just that everyone else needs to accommodate the growth. That's easy to say when you're raising $100 billion and the externalities land on someone else's bill. Hedgie🤗
