Operation Overlord (D-Day) was delayed for three years, while Stalin repeatedly pressed the Allies to open a second front in Europe to relieve pressure on the Eastern Front. The Western powers hoped the Soviets would be weakened by the fighting. The operation ultimately went ahead only after the Red Army went on the offensive and Churchill feared that the Soviets might take all of mainland Europe.
