“I don’t mind if he is German as they were brilliant to us at the Euros, they wanted us to win after they went out,” says one England fan of Thomas Tuchel. “I don’t mind whatever country they come from as long as he’s not Scottish or Argentinian.” If that gives a glimpse into the mindset of one fan, it will also reflect the mood of many towards Tuchel. England supporters just want somebody who can organise and galvanise the team and leave out stars in the interest of team balance, if required. They just want somebody who can steer England’s talented collection of players to victory in a tournament. England’s entry into the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and then the tournament itself will be eagerly awaited. Tuchel’s good. There’s no doubting Thomas. The FA will be relieved and delighted that it has landed a head coach of the elite calibre of Tuchel. The 51-year-old German is an A-list tactician and a winner, capable of making the right decisions at crunch moments, and committed to pacy, attacking football. The FA should still be embarrassed that it has failed to develop sufficient home-grown heavyweight contenders for the role, beyond Eddie Howe. International football should be our best against your best and the arrival of Tuchel simply highlights issues with the English coaching system. It’s hard to imagine the Deutscher Fussball-Bund appointing an Englishman. More investment is needed in St George’s Park. But that’s a longer-term problem. Once the FA has made the decision to appoint only its third foreign coach after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, Tuchel’s actual nationality should be of interest only to Little Englanders. He’s German, so what? Let’s hope he’s the Special Von. Tuchel’s first game at Wembley may be next month for the visit of the Republic of Ireland, which will coincide with Armistice and Poppy-wearing. The FA will have Tuchel well-prepared for that. He’s bright, studied for a (business) degree, and should see any trick questions coming his way. As a former barman, he should see any trouble coming his way. Tuchel must be aware of the intense scrutiny he will be under, and especially of his private life, which occurred during his time at Chelsea. The FA must be aware Tuchel can be high maintenance. He can fall out with people. But Harry Kane and Eric Dier enjoyed working under him at Bayern Munich. His reputation for not lasting long at clubs is not completed reflected in the figures: Tuchel was at Mainz for 183 games, Borussia Dortmund 107, Paris Saint-Germain 127, Chelsea 100 and Bayern, where it did sour, only 61. A 57.26% win ratio overall. He won nine trophies in that time including, famously, the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea against Manchester City in Porto. He is good. He is also very demanding, obsessive about detail, and a real perfectionist. That’s all very good but he will fall out with people, especially executives. The FA will be aware of that. It happened at Dortmund, PS-G, Chelsea and Bayern. He’s consistent. Yet international football management differs from club, he will be around executives less now. He's be busy attending games, scouting, and then coaching at St George's Park. Tuchel can be very charming but he can also get prickly with the media, especially if he suspects some agenda in the background. But the mood around Tuchel will be defined by results, and he’s capable of securing those and driving England far into the 2026 World Cup. Lee Carsley’s travails with his strange selection against Greece and then tangling himself up in knots in press conferences highlighted the need for a top operator. The FA has got that. There will be some fireworks along the way, though. #ENG

Been to most England games and tournaments for longer than I care to remember, but I've never seen as many England flags as tonight. Hope TV pans around and gets the sheer number. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Remember folks, when you see Pro Athletes like Tom Lockyer suddenly and unexpectedly collapse, it's rude to ask if they were vaccinated or not. That question was only appropriate to ask a few years back when people wanted to go to a bar, restaurant, funeral or keep their jobs.
