I am finally seriously considering leaving this platform and moving to Threads. Such a bummer that Musk is screwing up what was/could have been an amazing tool. So if this account and my @BikePortland account go quiet you'll know why.

@yourfriendpiper ummm yeah. It's actually weird to me how some people assume I don't! that's one of the problems w platforms like this.

Big news for bicycle riders who are often forced into risky traffic situations and/or feel unsafe due to some of these RVs.

@bimboposting Hi. What part of my tweet makes you think I'm "promoting" this? I'm saying it's big news and I'm sharing how these RVs impact bicycle users.

I relish opportunities to talk about bikes outside our choir and reach new ears. From 2017 but unfortunately (just like I said would happen!), folks still say this "bikers don't pay" stuff.
BikePortland@BikePortland

In 2017, Portland's ABC affiliate station @KATUNews had BP editor/publisher @Jonathan_Maus on their "Your Voice, Your Vote" interview show to talk about Oregon's (just passed) $15 tax on new bikes. The host asked "What abt people who say cyclists don't pay for roads?"

@Henryz_mom I think it's impossible to determine the reasons. But seems like a significant change — and especially if other states report similar (so far I've heard WA and CO are also down a lot) — it seems like a legit shift and not a statistical variation.

@Jonathan_Maus At a recent meeting someone showed similar stats for Portland road fatalities, relieved they are down YTD from last year. My question: can this be attributed to any specific change? Or is it statistical variation?

If my calculations are correct, Oregon has had 23% FEWER traffic deaths statewide in the first 7 months of the year: 2023 YTD - 347 fatalities 2024 YTD - 268 fatalities
