Relevant to my most recent Substack. Debt has been growing relative to GDP over time for many advanced countries. For Japan, it's debt is 2.37 times larger than its GDP. For the U.S., that number is 1.24. So, why has only one of these (Greece) defaulted in recent history?

Folks, time is up for the monopsony model in the context of the minimum wage. Showing how it can raise employment is good for cheap contrarianism, but it is not an adequate or accurate description of the labor market. nicholasdecker.substack.com/p/times-up-for…

Hoping this channel will teach a few people something new while hopefully inspiring at least one person to love economics as much as I do. Feel free to share it and provide suggestions! Here is the link: @jordanpeeplesphd" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">youtube.com/@jordanpeeples

Of course, I am just starting out, so there is a lot of room to grow. I never had video editing experience prior to this, so I plan to learn something new and get better with each video. Talking in front of a camera is a new experience as well.

I go deeper into this on my Substack (link in bio). Maybe one day, I will dig deeper into the reading scores and 8th grade test scores.

And that begs the questions: is this simply a matter of Mississippi's math curriculum aligning more with the NAEP test? And if so, should we be placing a lot of weight on geometry in the NAEP tests? Does it even matter for success?

Mississippi's rising 4th grade test scores became a very popular topic a couple months ago -- mainly their reading scores. There was a lot of debate on phonics. But their math scores also increased dramatically between 2011 and 2019.

I talk about how GenAI will be used by businesses to optimize our attention and willingness to buy their products in my latest Substack.

I think there has been a lot of debate on whether GenAI will destroy jobs, but there hasn't really been as much discussion on how businesses will actually use it to create value and affect everyone's daily life.

Census data show that in 2024, the top way businesses expected to use AI was “marketing automation.”

I wrote a long blot post on the economics of AI, prompted by two great workshops (Windfall and NBER), and me leaving OpenAI for METR: TLDR: we driving in the fog. 1. There is no standard model of AI’s economic impact. Economists have been using a wide range of assumptions to model AI’s impact, there is no standard framework. There seems to me an opportunity for ambitious economists to propose deep models of AI’s impact. A promising line would concentrate on AI’s ability to find low-dimensional representations of the world.

Physical business locations have not kept up with increasing population (and may have decreased entirely), while big businesses (500+ employees) now own a higher share of these locations.
