New paper on recent US tariffs with Matt Rognlie and @a_auclert Our focus: effects of temporary increases in tariffs (“tariff shocks") Three Qs: 1 Will tariffs lead to a recession? 2 Will they reduce the trade deficit? 3 Why are they not appreciating USD? (as in std theory) 🧵

Totally brilliant.
Arnaud Bertrand@RnaudBertrand

I'm normally not a big fan, but this is an absolutely brilliant answer by Larry Summers to the oft-repeated argument that China is somehow "cheating" in trade. In fact it's probably the best answer I've ever heard on this. It goes back to the point I was making (x.com/RnaudBertrand/…) in reply to Steve Miran's completely insane argument that having the dollar as a reserve currency is such a burden to the US that other countries need to compensate them for it. Thanks to the dollar reserve status, to quote Summers's rhetorical question: "If China wants to sell us things at really low prices and the transaction is we get solar collectors or we get batteries that we can put in electric cars and we send them pieces of paper that we print. Do you think that's a good deal for us or a bad deal for us?" Characterizing this as "cheating", like Summers rightly says, should be rejected entirely. At the end of the day, who's more "cheated": the party doing the hard work of producing goods at very low prices on razor thin margins, or the party that simply prints a virtually infinite amount of fiat money to pay for all this stuff?

Interesting to see some basic demand theory applied to tariff choices. So… What’s wrong with it? Used in isolation on a single small trading partner the formula makes some sense. But if applied widely to many non trivial ones it does not. 1/2

@AriamSofi @settenisok No concuerdo. No es una discriminación contra latam. Es simplemente que en latam nos portamos peor. Pareciera al final que Cerundolo le pide perdón en nombre del público, no?

@heeney_luke It covers 4 of the 5 points suggested for math preparation, with the exception of real and complex analysis. This is advanced economics master level in many countries. About real/complex analysis, it can help but not a must. In most PhD programs you learn in your 1st year anyways

@JorgeMirandaPi5 I think the ideal degree for an aspiring economist (in hindsight) is econ honours plus a math degree. The econ honours by itself doesn’t cover the AEA’s recommended pre reqs for PhD programs unfortunately

Australian undergrad econ degrees are largely to blame here: it's unclear who they're good for. Want to go into finance / consulting? Commerce sounds like better bang for buck. Want to become an economist? Study *math*. PhD programs care little for ug econ afr.com/work-and-caree…

@heeney_luke Plus, if you’re interested in economic policy, having a solid background in economics and econometrics is key for succeeding at places like the RBA, Treasury, or the Productivity Commission. Key jobs for a country. If you can get these skills in programs such as BAFE, great too

@heeney_luke It’s not that they’re bad for finance or consulting—it’s just that they aren’t really designed for those jobs. On the other hand, if you’re thinking about a PhD in economics, an honours degree in econ is a much better choice than a math degree.

@S_RF_CA @TvRFTennis Easy to say this but millman last shot had to be off forehand again , going down the line opened the whole court up to Federer

Throwback to the day where Federer defeated Millman in 5 sets. He was 4-8 down on the TB but then did not to miss a single shot for the epic comeback I was on the edge of my seat for that TB. Probably the last time I felt such emotions 🎥 @TvRFTennis

@pavyg @DeadGod60434 @alexdeminaur He could have done better? Perhaps, we all do every second. So is your feedback : just believe more in yourself Alex? Alex will potentially become a top-4 but if he does not, what is the big deal? I am sure he wants that more than anyone. He is a great player and person.
