Media Statement 8 February 2025 Government of South Africa notes the USA Executive Order The government of South Africa has taken note of the latest executive order issued by President Trump. It is of great concern that the foundational premise of this order lacks factual accuracy and fails to recognize South Africa's profound and painful history of colonialism and apartheid. We are concerned by what seems to be a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation. It is disappointing to observe that such narratives seem to have found favour among decision-makers in the United States of America. It is ironic that the executive order makes provision for refugee status in the US for a group in South Africa that remains amongst the most economically privileged, while vulnerable people in the US from other parts of the world are being deported and denied asylum despite real hardship. We reiterate that South Africa remains committed to finding diplomatic solutions to any misunderstandings or disputes. Tot ons grote verdriet moeten we delen dat onze 31-jarige collega Nasser Hamdi Abdelatif Al Shalfouh is overleden. Nasser werd gedood door granaatscherven op 8 oktober in Jabalia, Noord-Gaza. Sinds 7 oktober wordt Jabalia onophoudelijk aangevallen door Israëlische troepen en zitten mensen sindsdien vast zonder te kunnen vluchten. Nasser overleed op 10 oktober in het Kamal Adwan-ziekenhuis aan zijn verwondingen aan zijn benen en borstkas. Hij laat zijn vrouw en twee kinderen achter. Nasser kwam in maart 2023 bij ons in dienst als chauffeur en heeft sinds het begin van de oorlog niet meer gewerkt, omdat onze hulp in Noord-Gaza voor een groot deel stil kwam te liggen. We hebben geprobeerd de activiteiten in Noord-Gaza uit te breiden, maar dat is tot nu toe onmogelijk gebleken. Nadat Nasser gewond raakte kreeg hij eerst spoedeisende hulp in het Al Awda-ziekenhuis in Jabalia en werd later overgebracht naar het Kamal Adwan-ziekenhuis. Hij kon niet de benodigde zorg krijgen vanwege het gebrek aan capaciteit van het ziekenhuis en het overweldigende aantal patiënten. Overal in Gaza worden familieleden en geliefden nog steeds gedood en gewond door gevechten en bombardementen. Nasser is onze zevende collega die sinds het begin van de oorlog in Gaza is gedood. Al meer dan een jaar ontmantelen Israëlische troepen systematisch het zorgsysteem in Gaza, waardoor de toegang tot levensreddende zorg voor mensen wordt belemmerd. Tegelijkertijd zijn medische evacuaties bijna onmogelijk geworden, met name in het noorden dat grotendeels is afgesloten van de rest van Gaza, waardoor het voor mensen nog moeilijker is zorg te krijgen. We zijn geschokt door de dood van onze collega, die we ten zeerste veroordelen, en we roepen nogmaals op tot bescherming van burgers en hulpverleners. Onze gedachten zijn bij Nassers familie en alle collega's die rouwen om zijn dood.
