Your first 1M, 10M or 100M is not the money that will bring your family out of poverty. It is also not meant for big-boy/girl lifestyle. I have said this before and I hope my co-young Nigerians can learn. I know 1M looks like a very small money but for some, that’s the highest money you’d ever encounter AT ONCE in your life and whatever you are able to do with it can either make or mar your future. Around June-August 2020, I got my first job on Upwork and made about $1500 from it after paying others who worked with me. If I remember vividly, that was not even up to 1M as at then. But it changed my life positively and for good!!! Guess what, my lifestyle didn’t change too much just because I got that kinda money. As a matter of fact, I put most of the money in some of those investments that trended during that Covid period and was lucky enough to make 20-25% monthly till December before I pulled out (which thank God I did, as by January it crashed). That money was part of the initial capital for the gas plant that started running by April 2021. You know the funny thing was that I didn’t get another job between August and early December 2020 on Upwork. Imagine going from that good start to a 4-month dryness? Big time “enugbe”. The next job I got, I did the interview and exam late December and started working with them by 10th of January, 2021. That went on for 2 straight years. $400 monthly for the first year and $500 monthly for the second year. In between this, I had a few consistent clients and some one-time gigs here and there. By December 2021, I got another gig that paid between $500 – 1k monthly depending on work done and lasted about 8 months. In 2022 as well, I got a one-time $1k job on Fiverr. I lost both Upwork and Fiverr accounts in November and December 2022, consecutively! In between all of these, I consistently ran my tutorial (Highflyers Tutors) and 2 gas stations (opened the first at April 2021 and the second at April 2022). I didn’t disregard my physical businesses just because I was making some good money, as you may call it, online! My lifestyle still did not really change so big as I knew I wasn’t there yet. If not that I changed my mind and decided to relocate, I honestly hoped I’d get to a point from physical businesses where I’d make at least 1M monthly since I knew freelancing was not always consistent! My rent was less than 200k per year. That was something I could make in 2 weeks or max of a month. I knew people who made $10k or more and blew it. As at same 2021, someone I knew faintly made about 60M, slept in hotels and went to clubs for close to 6 months until he blew that money till the last drop finished! They’re mostly yahoo boys, btw. So, as I said earlier, your first financial breakthrough isn’t what will pull all your family out of poverty. It is also not for living large and showing off that you’ve arrived! Rather, it’s a seed that, if used or invested well, can take you to greater heights and eventually help your loved ones as well. But if misused, you might end up poorer than you used to be! YOU ARE NOT A YAHOO BOY so you shouldn’t be trying to use your breakthrough money to impress anyone.

Senegal is becoming a perfect case study of what happens when revolutionary politics finally meets the realities of governing. It’s easy to unite people against a system. It’s much harder to run the economy, negotiate debt, satisfy voters and still maintain the purity of the movement. A lot of liberation-style movements in Africa struggle once they transition from opposition to government because charisma and slogans eventually collide with budgets, IMF pressure and state institutions. That’s exactly what we’re watching in Senegal right now.

West Africans need to stop forcing our history into Abrahamic or Middle Eastern narratives. It’s historically inaccurate, and honestly, it reflects a deep cultural insecurity. You Ijebu people are not Jews. Queen Sheba did not visit Ijebuland. Hausas are not Arabs from Baghdad. Igbos are not Israelites. We need to stop romanticizing foreign origins as if our civilizations only become meaningful when linked to the Middle East. West Africa already has a rich, ancient, and sophisticated history of its own, you have the Nok, Ile-Ife, Benin, Oyo, Gao, Mali, Kanem-Bornu, Igbo-Ukwu, and countless others. Many of our ancestors had lived and developed cultures in these lands for tens of thousands of years before Judaism, Christianity, or Islam even emerged. There is nothing inferior about being indigenous to Africa. We do not need borrowed identities to validate our existence, intelligence, spirituality, or achievements. Our history stands on its own. Stop it!

Do you know that Queen of Sheba that went to visit King Solomon in the Bible died in Nigeria 💔? Her burial site is located in Oke-Eri, a small village in Ogun State, Nigeria. It functions as an active pilgrimage and tourist site.
