New evidence that the transition to illicit fentanyl may be behind rising HCV rates in the US. In a longitudinal cohort of people who inject drugs, those using fentanyl were much more likely to contract HCV Published today @CIDJournal w/ @chngin_the_wrld academic.oup.com/cid/advance-ar…

We hypothesize that the short half-life and long withdrawal syndrome of fentanyl increases HCV risk factors. The White House has labeled HCV elimination a national priority. Accomplishing that means investigating how synthetic drugs like fentanyl drive infectious disease risk.

Our sample size of 10 HIV seroconversions was too small to assess if the same holds true for HIV, but a similar direction relationship was seen -- with a hazard ratio of 2.39 (95% CI: 0.66–8.64).
