Renate Reinsve is the quintessential western actor: Soulless face, empty eyes, bland body language, stoic dialogue delivery, and an exotic name, like those French words that critics claim to know how to pronounce to sound sophisticated. This person being considered the pinnacle of western acting is completely on brand, which tells you more about the West's standards than hers. NPCs in modern video games possess better acting talent. Western cinema standards were never very high. Just observe how easily the Soviets mogged well-established western movie industries repeatedly. Centuries of head start and virtually limitless productive capacity - only to be surpassed by a socialist country within a few decades. And China will soon deliver the second humiliation, as it has already started doing for the video game industry. The standards at Cannes are amongst the lowest in the world. Which is precisely why it needs an endless supply of money and red carpets to survive. The replacement of emotional emptiness for artistic depth is peak Cannes, peak France, and peak westernness all rolled into one. A local theatre actor from any Indian town would have done a better job in SENTIMENTAL VALUE, not just with the depth of emotion and expression, but with vocal range too. You can call it a "decay", but that would be a category error, because it was never too alive and fresh to begin with. It seems the downfall of western civilization, such as it was, is now fully extending to art and culture. We are so back.

Renate Reinsve’s Cannes run is becoming legendary: • 2021 — The Worst Person in the World (Best Actress Winner) • 2024 — Armand (Camera d’Or) • 2025 — Sentimental Value (Grand Prix) • 2026 — Fjord (Palme d’Or)

Stop this madness it was one cliche after another

COLUMN: Inde Navarrette’s performance in #Obsession should be remembered (and, more importantly, actually considered) come award season. Her work is singularly brave and brilliant, standing alongside rich horror performances in recent years like Lupita Nyong’o in “Us” and Toni Collette in “Hereditary.” Voters, don’t make the same mistake you did by ignoring those lauded women. I've no real interest in a Supergirl movie. The trailer looks like fairly standard safe-action-comedy CGI superhero fare to me. But I like movies, so genuinely, good luck to them. What has been interesting, though, is watching its lead star, Milly Alcock, seemingly fail to understand the assignment. It's not even that what she said was necessarily wrong. The point is that her job right now isn't to be "right" about everything. It's to help sell a product that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to as many people as possible. Stars of massive studio films really need media coaching on how to avoid picking fights while promoting a movie. It should begin with understanding that saying anything which can be perceived as attacking your audience is a really, really bad move. When asked about "fan backlash", it shouldn't be difficult to give some version of: "I love this character, and we put everything into making this film. I'm excited for fans to see it. I understand people can be passionate and opinionated, but that passion is why we get to make these movies in the first place". Easy. Isn't it? Making movies is a team sport. They require the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of people, most of whom you'll never know by name. The lead actor should be going to bat for every single one of them every time they step in front of the press. This means doing your best to be as likeable to as many people as possible.

Milly Alcock addresses the backlash she received after saying that “simply existing as a woman is something that people comment on. We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies.” “I didn’t even say ‘men’ — I said ‘people!’” Alcock says. “And they got so angry. I was like, ‘You’re proving my point. You’re proving my point!’” “And [the backlash] is from a lot of people whose profiles have no photo, who are burner accounts. Or someone’s name and then ‘Dad of four, Christian,’ which is hilarious to me. But I mean, whose opinion do you really care about? If you’re pissing the right kind of people off, you’re doing OK.” wp.me/pc8uak-1lHi9I

@g_f_red I like that he posted this photo to prove something and it just looks like a normal high st. Meanwhile people who are actually from the area know that it has changed massively over the past 20 years, much safer, with a mixture of new and old alongside each other

It doesnt get more 'Yes In My Backyard' than going on Google maps to say a place that you clearly dont live in is a shithole that ought to be demolished, so that people who can pay £700k for a flat can live near Shoreditch. Get Out Of Your Own Backyard.

Just watched a bit of The Boys for the first time ever and it’s like if Alan Moore had added captions saying SUPERHEROES ARE MORALLY COMPROMISED to every frame of Watchmen. So bad, do we even have subtlety in the mainstream anymore.
