Why #MUFC are having a hard time in finding a partner for Mainoo and Bruno? Last season, we saw an extreme transition based style from Ten Hag. The midfield often looked empty when the opposition counters happened. Not only that, we had no control whatsoever when we had possession in the first phase of buildup. If Ten Hag persists with that style of football finding a DM is next to impossible. Ideally you need a midfielder who covers ground horizontally extremely well, recovers ball often with high energy, stops counter attacks on his own at times, aerially very good, takes the burden of first phase buildup very well, and is highly press resistant. This midfielder does not exist. Before finding the new midfielder, United must decide what they want from the midfielder and how they change the structure. There are 2 frameworks for this. 1. Ball playing midfielder — You go for a midfielder who is excellent on the ball, a pass first player, who will excel in the first phase buildup. This player needs to be decent in defending especially positionally. I would prefer for this player to be good aerially as well. — Then you change the rest defense so that this new DM is not left alone on his own in midfield, especially during opposition counters. This means dropping Mainoo to the double pivot or asking one of the fullbacks to invert to provide solid rest defense. You need to play with 3-2-5 setup as opposed to 3-1-6 for example. — Most top managers would go for this setup where they take up the burden of rest defense with shape change while adding ball progression through player quality. 2. Proper destroyer — Sign a proper destroyer who recovers the ball for fun, covers ground well horizontally, and adds a lot of energy. This midfielder has to be press resistant even if he doesn’t have the creativity and passing range of a playmaker — Give the buildup burden to the back 4 + GK. Essentially you bypass the DM while building up. Ten Hag has done this at Ajax when he played with Alvarez. All his defenders were elite on the ball and Alvarez didn’t have to take up the burden of buildup. I believe signing De Ligt and Mazraoui would help since they are good on the ball. An alternative is dropping Mainoo during the buildup phase. This is something Ten Hag did with De Jong in his 2018-19 side. De Jong would drop and help build up and then when the ball progressed to the final third he would join the attack while the other midfiekder (Schone) would drop to form the rest defense. — I don’t think many top managers would choose this setup in modern football (Enrique certainly won’t and that’s the reason he is selling Ugarte). But, Ten Hag in the past has shown that he can make it work. Summary — United must choose which set up they want to go with and get midfielders who fit that strategy. In any case, we cannot go back to the tactics of last season.
