@crossjacktar @StuartMaggs @ilkleyIain Yes that's something I've been a bit confused about. Corporations don't pay IHT correct. In which case they will be thrilled to take land off of farmers hands
English

@JoshFarms @StuartMaggs @ilkleyIain Why do corporations pay IHT at all? Personal investors, yes, the 50% discount is still a massive incentive.
English

@StuartMaggs @ilkleyIain Surely land prices will NOT come down when corporates and investors can still take advantage of a 50% discount on inheritance tax?!
English

I watched it. I'm afraid I'm not going to again. I disagree with too many things he said to go through them all. I think Mr Murphy and I just fundamentally disagree on how we view society. If you don't mention that massively devaluing agricultural land is going to destroy an industry dependent on secured lending, it's because you have another agenda.
English

@AlexHeffron20 He did a great job in the first half of the video. Then it all fell apart with his prediction of land prices coming down
English

@Socialist_Crow @keewa The data the gov are referencing only include farms that claim for APR. Commercial farms will have both APR and BPR to deal with:

No Farmers, No Food@NoFarmsNoFoods
A brilliant visual explanation and analysis by farmer and No Farmers, No Food steering group member Charles Goadby @thisfarmlife (with farm Lego!) on the Labour government’s punishment (inheritance tax) on family farms. Please watch and share.
English

@JoshFarms @keewa 1. Don't care, even if true.
2. The head of that department agrees with the tax and accepts that will only impact a minority.

English

@Socialist_Crow @keewa "BBC Newsnight understands that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which represents the interests of farmers in government, believes it was not properly consulted over the change. "
bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
English

@JoshFarms @keewa Because they're aspiring tax dodgers. And you're wrong, the majority of farms won't be affected, and only a tiny number will be impacted each year. There are 209,000 farms, only 70,000 affected by the tax, and a mere 500 impacted each year.
English

@AlexHeffron20 The problem here is that everyone believes the treasury's statistic. They insist that only the super rich will be taxed. If this was true it's like - why the hell would all these working farmers waste their time striking?!? Nobody wants to drive to London in a tractor for fun
English

@AlexHeffron20 100% I agree. If prices do come down they don't stay there long. For every seller there will be a buyer waiting
English

@Socialist_Crow @keewa Why do you think thousands of busy farmers are about to use their precious time to protest? The government figures are WRONG. The majority (2/3) of hard working family farms WILL be impacted. The general public have no idea how bad this is. Farmers are under extreme pressure
English

@JoshFarms @keewa They are wealthy investors trying to avoid tax so that they can keep hold of more profit for themselves instead of contributing to the needs of society.
If you like food and schools and hospitals, you should support tax paying farmers.
English

@Socialist_Crow @keewa Farmers are not investment bankers! They are producing food in a hostile environment whilst trying to stay in business.
If you like food you should support farmers
English

@JoshFarms @keewa So they gambled all their money away and expect the government to bail them out when money is desperately needed for schools and hospitals.
English

@clv101 To clarify farm equipment doesn't fall under APR but instead falls under BPR which has also been reformed
English

@clv101 I from what I can gather farm equipment is included in the value farm estates. If this is true then the number of farms impacted is surely far greater than claimed. A single combine harvester is worth 500,000. Imagine adding on tractors and all other associated equipment!
English

"...average return on capital for farms (which is the percentage return that they are making from things like land and machinery) is only about 0.5%, which is very low."
This is mad, not like other businesses, earn better rate at a high street bank!
