2 years ago today, my nephew killed himself. This day will be burned into my memory the rest of my life. If you want to know about JP’s Story, please read below.
I miss you JP, I think about you all the time.
🧵
My 13 year old nephew loved TikTok. He was constantly on it and making videos. In October of 2021, he killed himself. He was FaceTiming with two girls his age and hung himself. These two girls were telling him to do it. They recorded him doing it and posted the video to TikTok. I’m not sure how long the the video was up, but it was removed. The two girls were charged, but I am unsure about what happened to them. Nothing was ever in the news about this because they were all minors.
I’m going to attempt to tell more of JP’s Story. It’s not easy to talk about, but I will do my best.
I first want to say I’m not blaming the apps, I honestly don’t know exactly how or who to place blame. The two girls is who I am mad at and I do not know their names or what they look like. My sister and family does know, I personally do not. I choose this because I do not want to actively hate someone. I do not want to waste my time on hate.
I personally do not believe a 13 year old should not have access to these phones and all the social media apps. That being said, try being the only 13yo in your class without a phone or some kind of device. The majority of kids have some form of device to access all of this.
My sister had three kids, My Neice, (age 16 in 2021), JP (13 in 2021), and Matthew(age 9 in 2021). Matthew has Cerebral Palsy so my sister decided to quit her job as a teacher to take care of Matthew. My Neice and JP were great with Matthew and helped a lot with taking care of him.
JP was a happy kid. He was always smiling. Always dancing. Below is the last TikTok he posted, a little over a month before he was gone. This is his sister in the video with him. They were best friends. If you go through his TikTok, you will find he danced a lot. Even the detective on his case commented on how much JP loved to dance. Before JP got his own phone, he used my sisters phone to record his dances and post them.
My early recollection of TikTok was “a dancing app”. It seemed people would record themselves dancing, then others would try and mimic the dance. For the record, I’m always not up-to-date on new trends.
Again, I am not blaming TikTok for what happened. I’m attempting to tell JP’s Story and he loved TikTok.
I guess what I’m trying to say is JP was not a depressed kid. He had a great life and a big family. Both sets of grandparents are still alive and love him very much. He was constantly playing with his many cousins. He was also extremely caring. He would constantly help with his little brother. He would help anyone he saw that needed help. He was great at talking to people. I can continue on for a while telling stories about him.
When we talk about losing JP, we say that JP killed himself. We do not say he committed suicide. In the literal definition of the word suicide, JP did commit suicide. When I think of suicide, I also think of sadness, depression, etc. JP was none of these things. He was happy. We believe that JP did not mean to die. I think he was “trying to teach these girls a lesson” by letting them think he hung himself. JP was also a prankster. There were things the detectives found in his room that led them to think this wasn’t planned. One example, they found a Christmas list he had been working on (this happened in October of 2021). There were other things they found but I’m not going to list them all.
What happened that night? These two girls have been messing and basically bullying JP (this was not the first time). The detectives found multiple messages, screenshots, etc. on the girls and JP’s phones/devices. They have been going back and forth for a while. They told JP to hang himself on multiple occasions along with calling him many different names.
