Housing is critical to creating a community that works for everyone. Our housing plan should help our residents find housing that meets their needs at a price they can afford. We can’t do that if most of our efforts on housing are designed to raise existing property values.

Nitrate pollution from upstream ag runoff is straining water works ability to meet Safe Drinking Water standards. And those standards are likely not sufficiently protective given the cancer linkage with lower levels of nitrate.

Central Iowa Water Works & Des Moines Water Works are advising that in order to continue to meet the drinking water standard for nitrate, central Iowa water users in the coming days may need to reduce or hold off on lawn watering altogether.

12 partner groups joined IEC in a petition to the EPA to take emergency action on nitrate in drinking water. "We can no longer stand by as state officials cover their eyes and plug their noses to the massive amounts of manure contaminating our waterways," says IEC's Alicia Vasto.
