New publication in Public Choice, coauthored with @JoshuaDAmmons and Shishir Shakya! The paper examines whether U.S. covert regime change operations during the Cold War reshaped the ideological orientation of target regimes. rdcu.be/fbgJo

Yes, that is probably true. But I really want to emphasize the complementary research of my friends @JoshuaDAmmons @Shishirshky and @JustinTCallais who point up the many upside (and persistence) of nonviolent changes.

I'm teaching this in my quant class tomorrow as an example of estimating causal effects with observational data. No, I didn't add it after Iran's Supreme Leader was assassinated. It was already on the syllabus.

As a friend of the Cuban dissidents for close to a decade now, this would be the worst way to free Cubans of dictatorship. Here is the simple fact of the matter -- human liberty (and its institutions) is a a dimmer switch. It an ecosystem. It needs to grow in the soil in which it will florish. Its environment will make it unique in how it protects property rights, free speech, open elections, and open markets. The incentives that govern choice in any ecosystem will dictate the path, and these incentives can only be figured out by people there. External attempts at regime change will fail. What they risk producing instead is yet another Batista -- someone who begins on the far left only to become a right-wing dictator -- or a tinpot strongman enriching himself under the banner of communism (Castro). Cuba is an awesome place. Why insist on denying its equally awesome people the right to make their own choices?

🚨 BREAKING: President Trump announces the United States might have a "FRIENDLY TAKEOVER of Cuba" "We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba." "We've had a lot of years of dealing with Cuba...They're in BIG TROUBLE." 🔥🇺🇸
