@atropos69617136 Take a look at Matt Damon’s shoulders when you’ve seen the movie and come back to me.

I have more of a problem with Matt Damon. Role was played by Kirk Douglas in "Ulysses"- if the two battled you wouldn't even be able to bet on the winner- only the over/under on how many seconds it would take before Douglas cut him in half.

Illiterate rage-bait. Modern Greeks look & sound nothing like Homer’s Greeks, and they’re hardly traditionally “white.” Nolan’s cast looks & sounds like modern Americans because he is claiming that America is the inheritor & torchbearer of Western Civilization.

One thing I will say about the Odyssey is you’ll want to see it in IMAX because that’s the format Homer originally sang it in

@JoshuaHerr6 "inheritor & torchbearer"??? I thought that was "cultural appropriation" as far as Hollywood was concerned.

@JoshuaHerr6 @GiancarloSopo This is a convincing argument. Has Nolan made it? I still think it’s a demoralization campaign, but good point.

I hated Batman Begins at first because I loved the Tim Burton/90’s animated versions but I got a different, darker Batman with major character and plot changes. Now it’s my favorite Batman to watch, though no substitute for the “real thing,” which everyone should still see. Nolan’s take on The Odyssey is a similar departure. It’s nothing like the poem, which is a must-read, but it’s still The Odyssey, and a monumental movie experience.

See The Odyssey in @IMAX. If you have the luxury of choosing between IMAX theaters, prioritize audio. Buy tickets now and choose a later showing if you have to. This movie is selling out & not meant for a standard theater.

I often criticized Lindsey Graham. But this weekend, I learned his full story: - Orphaned young, he adopted & raised his little sister instead of letting her go into the system. - Grew up dirt poor, racking balls in his parents’ pool hall. - In search of opportunity, he joined the Air Force. Served 33 years. Retired a Colonel. - Then spent decades in Congress, earning respect across the aisle. - Bashed Trump hard in ~2016, then respected the will of the voters, and grew to become a loyal ally. - Humble. Devoted to his constituents. - Driven by patriotism (even when misguided). Never in it for the money. Could've cashed in any time like most of his colleagues. - That Disney trip everyone mocked? Just a good uncle taking his beloved nieces. He smiled through (and ignored) the hate to protect his family. RIP to a self-made American original.

Every American should spend at least one Independence Day in Southern California. Nothing compares to 3 hours of continuous fireworks in every direction as far as the eye can see.

Great article on the rift that’s exploded since Obergefell (2015) in the misnomered “LGBT community.” The words distinguish between people who (1) are attracted to the same sex but adhere to a set of (revised) traditional norms and (2) reject categories and norms on principle.

I'm in print in The New York Times today: "I'm Gay, Not Queer. It Matters." So many gay (and bisexual and transgender) people agree with me, but we have felt it nearly impossible to speak up without being shouted down. But the tides are now starting to turn. I'm very grateful.

Let’s now deal reasonably, instead of hysterically, with what to do. First, the flow of illegal aliens into the country has collapsed to negligible numbers. So securing the border mitigates that issue. Second, the President could issue a new executive order on birthright citizenship to apply to American territories. It is an existing and well-settled piece of law that the 14th Amendment does not automatically apply to American territories. Much of the birth tourism industry focuses on Guam and other American territories in the Pacific. The President could use a narrowly tailored executive order in American territories to shut down birth tourism there. Third, the Secretary of State, under existing laws, could crack down on pregnant women traveling to the United States to engage in birth tourism and use his clout to pressure foreign governments to help with compliance. There are plenty of executive actions that could be taken without the hysteria of those online declaring an end to America. Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court declared that the United States will continue interpreting the 14th Amendment as it has been interpreted for the last 140 years. That’s all that happened. The President can continue to secure the border, deport illegal aliens, and crack down on birth tourism without running afoul of the Court’s opinion. The Congress, too, can and should crack down on birth tourism. For all of you blasting the conservatives on the Court, remember that the President could have more narrowly tailored his original executive order. The maximalist position always tends to lose in the Supreme Court, and that’s the President and his advisors’ problem, not the Supreme Court’s problem. ewerickson.substack.com/p/calm-down

TIL you’re supposed to flush your hot water heater every year. Do people know this? I’ve been in my house 5 years and had no idea this was a part of home ownership. Enough metal came out to make like 2 pennies.

If modesty is obligatory for Christians by virtue of the 7th commandment, then I think wearing Crocs is forbidden by the 6th commandment. Help a brother out.
