“Nigeria has not over borrowed compared to countries like Egypt, South Africa and Senegal” — Bayo Onanuga The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has defended Nigeria’s rising borrowing, saying the country is not over-leveraged compared to Egypt, South Africa and Senegal. Reacting on X, he argued that critics misunderstand public finance and Nigeria’s debt position. “Nigeria has not over borrowed compared to countries like Egypt, South Africa and West African country of Senegal,” he wrote. “Nigeria is credit worthy and can still take more loans to finance infrastructure. The unwarranted alarm against loans is symptomatic of economic and financial ignorance.” He was responding to an X user, Akinwumi, who compared debt levels across countries. The post noted that Egypt’s debt is over $400 billion with a GDP of about $390 billion, while South Africa’s debt stands at about $580 billion against a GDP of roughly $420 billion. Nigeria’s debt was placed at about $110 billion with a GDP of around $340 billion, giving a lower debt-to-GDP ratio of about 35 percent. “Yet some people keep shouting that Nigeria is the ‘loan capital of the world,’” it added. The comments come amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s borrowing under the Tinubu administration, with critics warning about debt servicing pressures and economic hardship, while the government insists loans are needed for infrastructure and key sectors.
