after years of throwing and attending events in our industry,
i experienced something that everyone should be aware of too
i knew this happened, but i never knew it was like this, until it happened to me.
the other night i threw a launch event for a company in hong kong.
i’ve always believed “the more the merrier”
i personally don’t like to be exclusive and so if someone wanted to join a crypto event? let them in!
but this week changed that for me.
30+ professional sim swappers targeted my event.
locals even knew them.
an attendee pulled me aside and said
“3 of them are already inside” and showed proof from a local HK chat
for 4 hours straight over 30 people tried forcing entry.
same script. same tactics. same aggressive behavior.
“my colleague is already here!!”
(pointing to the same guy every time)
then even if denied entry, they begged for wifi while they “waited in lobby” as close to guest as possible.
all while continuing to hover, harass, and deeply offend me.
when asked for a twitter? telegram?
ANY industry affiliation… they couldn’t name even one.
they didn’t even know the main conference happening in the city!!!
after the first two, the red flags were obvious.
thankfully the venue team caught on quickly with me.
this experience has been weighing heavy on me the past 24 hours and i didn’t think id even share it on x
however after some deep thought…
here’s the part that stuck with me:
crypto events are heavily targeted.
and the people at the door…
they’re not being “difficult.”
they’re protecting everyone inside.
if you’re throwing events in this industry:
be cautious. verify. brief your staff. trust your gut.
and to everyone else:
please don’t harass the people working the door.
they’re doing their job. they’re protecting YOUR wallets, identities, and careers.
