On Live From, @mcginleygolf makes the key point about why Aronimink was a compelling test: Firmness. The tilt and firmness of Aronimink’s fairways and greens enabled a precise driver of the golf ball to leverage that skill. The thickness of the rough is entirely secondary. If the course had been soft, the rough would have been relatively less of a bother for the bombers, who could control their approaches enough for it not to matter. Long rough is okay in moderation but it is nowhere near a requirement to deliver an interesting major-quality test. Another interesting nugget that I saw from @LukeKerrDineen earlier: Rai’s driver spins more than almost anyone else’s in the field. That was crucial this week. More spin would have tempered the landing of Rai’s drives, limiting nasty kicks. I would bet he hit a lot fewer approaches from a foot into the rough than most players in the field. It’s nice to see precision beat power for a change, but the fact that it requires extremely cooperative weather is still an indication that golf equipment needs further regulation.
