When a college student (Austin Franco) at an ivy league university (@Cornell) can write to a potential employer, "I'm not interested in working for a Jew," and this employer is then viciously attacked online for sharing Franco's Jew hatred as an example of antisemitism, we're well past the tipping point of social acceptance of antisemitism in the U.S. If you ever wondered what you would have done in 1933 Berlin, you're doing it now.

Of course I disagree with his antisemitic behavior. But publicly amplifying a private job rejection from a college student, especially when it includes a government official threatening to blacklist him from future employment, was disproportionate and counterproductive. Even if you believe he deserved serious consequences, this approach backfires. It creates sympathy for him, invites accusations of overreach and weaponization, and shifts focus away from confronting actual antisemitism more credibly.

Yup, just lie about the whole story now. That’s exactly how this spins into more antisemitism. It’s actually: - Kid applied for a job on Handshake - Employer messages to set up a time - Kid responds with times available - Employer follows up again - Kids responds “not interested in working for a jew” Nobody hounded him for jobs. He didn’t “find out we were Jewish and explain himself that he has had bad experiences.” Just read the conversation below and maybe tell the story the right way next time.

And if you don't agree morally, at least understand that there is a case to be made that the widening controversy caused more attention and sympathy towards overreaction against Franco, even if you yourself don't understand that sympathy.

There is nothing a 19 year old, especially one I did not know, could ever say to me that would make me this rageful. He could talk about my looks, my gender, my race, my ancestry, my personality, even my immediate family and it would never have this effect on me. Something is seriously mentally wrong when tons of powerful grown adults’ first instinct is to shift into a collective effort to make sure this 19 year old is punished indefinitely. A healthy society does not encourage this kind of vindictiveness.

I recently found out that I share the same first and last name with a 19 year old student at Cornell who is going viral (over ten million views across twitter and other platforms) for anti-Semitic comments that he made (and continues to make) to a prospective-employer. My social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and law firm email address are being blown up by people understandably angry at this other Austin Franco. None of the posts cross any legal lines, but unfortunately there have been comments and emails talking about me, my firm, my parents, etc. To make matters worse, the undergraduate looks just enough like me to be confusing, and the NY Post, Fox News, and other publications, have written about it with his image as the article cover. The bad Austin Franco is continuing to make these statements to media and on social media, so we wanted to go on the record disassociating me and the law firm from him. I am hoping this post will alleviate some confusion for the general public. I appreciate all the people who have reached out!

But there are downsides. You aren't acknowledging those. It's easy to say something is worth the cost when you don't acknowledge there are any costs. But the costs are high. Scorched earth is rarely the best option. It wasn't the best option here. It was a pretty crappy option.

I seriously think, as Jews, we should stop categorising ourselves into Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim etc. We are Jews. We are all Jews. And to our enemies, it's that simple. So why can't it be that simple for us? No need for separation. We all came from one place and got dispersed into the diaspora.
