I repeated what my grandpa, who was an Auschwitz prisoner, said to me about it, and I had a Jewish teacher calling me an antisemite in 3rd grade. They tried doing a whole family humiliation ritual, and my furious dad came down with my grandfather and demanded they call him a liar to his face. He showed his shoebox of documents and said he didn’t cry about it his whole life, and he was exhausted hearing about it, and they should all move on. I can’t repeat what he said due to EU laws, but he put a huge portion of the blame on Bolsheviks for the violence and traitors inside the government who fled after instigating the war, leaving everyone else to suffer for their decisions. You have to accept that the winner writes the history, and Jews and communists educated us about the narrative, leaving out the entire Bolshevik part. That knee-jerk reaction—defending it and calling anyone who questions the narrative a Nazi—is the propaganda mechanism trained in us. I used to have the same reaction until my dad pointed out that I’m defending it like I saw it with my own eyes.
