Yesterday, we introduced you to our newest addition, Bumpy the orphaned hippo. This was his flight down to Kaluku. He was a perfect passenger – he scrambled right into Keeper Joseph's lap and spent most of the trip chattering in little hippo grunts! Bumpy is very new to the fold – he was rescued over the weekend. His mother appears to have died in a territorial fight, likely defending her baby's life. Now, Bumpy has a family with us and a wild future ahead. Can you people at least TRY to eat less meat? Tofu is really yummy when you get the hang of cooking it. Same with beans and lentils. Try ordering a tofu pad thai instead of chicken, or a veggie burger instead of beef. It’s better for your health to eat less meat too!!

Living with post-concussive syndrome is hard in ways most people can’t see. The symptoms—headaches, dizziness, brain fog, eye strain, and constant fatigue—are invisible, but they impact everything. Mom has been living with this for 20 years with no help from neurologists - science has advanced. There are finally some options for diagnosis and possible treatments. Simple, everyday environments like work or even a grocery store can feel overwhelming. Bright lights, movement, everyday conversations and noise can trigger anxiety, disorientation, and exhaustion. Tasks that used to be easy—focusing, remembering, switching between screens or distances—now take real effort. Mom’s currently being treated for vestibular and cognitive dysfunction and scored exceedingly high on the post-concussive rating scale. The daily therapies themselves can be incredibly disruptive and exhausting day to day, but she’s holding onto hope for improvement. She has an appointment with a specialist who is a neurooptometrist. Mom also has an MRI with specialized DTI imaging scheduled to better understand past injury, brain activity, and possible atrophy. She finally has a fantastic neuro doctor who specializes in sports medicine concussions. By the end of the day, there’s often nothing left in the tank. It can mean pulling back from social situations, struggling to keep up, and feeling isolated or misunderstood. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not real.
