PERSONAL UPDATE: After 5+ years, I am leaving @a16z to start a fund! This was the toughest career decision of my life. I learned from the best partners and was privileged to work with incredible founders. So why leave? It is simply time to build. More to come on this.

While everyone is focused on LLMs, a 10-year-old transformer architecture, there is a whole new set of frontier labs that believe that the current LLMs aren't fit for purpose. And they are right. There is a new wave of disruption. It is coming and will take everyone by storm. I suspect the current labs will buy the new frontier model labs as soon as they show early results. AGI will be less about a mega model and more about a super-smart model/agent orchestrator that splits tasks and sends them to the best model. Congrats Yann LeCun! You are propelling the French startup ecosystem.

Given the spaceship-like complexity of the instrument, 9 of the first 10 Moog albums shared one musician: Paul Beaver. Even as AI lowers the learning curve, I think there’s still real opportunity for early adopters to become exceptional at end-to-end hit creation (and earn the producer credits that come with it).

A highlight from my recent trip to @NAMM was seeing the Moog synthesizer in action. For those unfamiliar, this instrument (technology) has been a pillar of the music that we all love - producing the rock, electronic, and pop sounds of the 60s. From the Moog Foundation: “At first, Bob Moog didn’t think of his synthesizer as a total solution for the musician… ‘There was never a notion that a synthesizer would be used by itself for anything.’ But as soon as the first modular systems were available, musicians from many genres began to think of the Moog as a standalone musical instrument.”

Happy Monday! Sharing a highlight from our work with Mozart AI: ElevenLabs provides the underlying music model and API that enables Mozart to develop a new kind of DAW - a generative DAW that combines ease of use with granular control. This allows producers to work with individual stems, refine specific sections, and move quickly from idea to production-ready output. Our work together reflects a shared belief that powerful creative tools should be accessible without compromising creative control. Read more here: elevenlabs.io/blog/mozart-ai

Cohort models and recommendation engines have blurred the line between genuine and engineered preference. Music happens to be an interesting medium that makes preference especially clear. It triggers pleasure and emotion, revealing taste in ways that are both true and increasingly measurable.

As the AI systems we’re all beginning to use at a growing pace get better at execution, we’re now forced to get better ourselves at defining what it is we really want. "Prompt engineering” is a task that poses the deepest questions we’ve been asking ourselves all along: What do I like? What do I want?
