@Julillla

Political philosopher; I like old things of all sorts; still merrily assembling a patchwork identity.

Did I do Bamberg right, @Julillla? I also got a strawberry ice cream mit Pfeffer without realizing they were WHOLE PEPPERCORNS. That is a brilliant idea...but also quite something to have in a heat wave.

Going to vacay a bit in Germany in July. Rough path: München/Alps ➡️ Nürnberg ➡️ Erfurt/Weimar ➡️ Mainz (fixed). Any unusual events/places? Rough equivalents of Musée Art Brut or Museum of Jurassic Technology: might love or hate, but would be sad to learn about after return.

@ShriramKMurthi @stbrunthaler And while you're on the way, Bamberg is well worth a visit if you have time for an extra stop, though I may be biased because I went to university there. Just a uniquely well-preserved town that doesn't feel kitschy (have some Schlenkerla Rauchbier, while you're there)

@ShriramKMurthi @stbrunthaler On that note, just taking the train from Nürnberg to Erfurt is worth it. Used to be incredibly scenic and very slow (you can still get that experience if you take the regional trains), but as of 2018, you travel at 300 km/h between Bamberg and Erfurt.

@ShriramKMurthi @stbrunthaler If you haven't been already, don't skip the Deutsche Museum in Munich deutsches-museum.de All (?) of science and technology from physics to transportation (they have a few early computers as well), lots of hands-on demonstrations (e.g., a Faraday cage in action)

In our faculty flash talk series, @ms705 is giving a killer talk about how he and @Julillla built an entire classroom in their house to try to reproduce his live classroom during remote learning. I'm so blown away. (Love teaching in a dept where people compete on teaching well.)

me: if pinocchio’s nose grows proportional to the lie he tells and he tells lies that get half as severe, it never stops growing but always has a finite length french person: [nodding] ze nose paradox

Once we’re past the pandemic, I’ll be organizing a gathering for people who like old scripting languages and potatoes. It’s going to be called awk tuber fest.

@justinesherry @oatesmeal @HannahLebovits @caddington11 2) remind myself that students really do take on constructive feedback. I keep a mental list of students who really grew as writers and thinkers and whenever I feel like I want to cry over any particular essay I imagine that this student might end up on that list. :-)

@justinesherry @oatesmeal @HannahLebovits @caddington11 But it helps me to remind myself that 1) students are under pressure and may not spend as much time & effort as I would like. For writing assignments - unlike e.g. programming assignments - it's also easier to just send off the first draft. Not as obvious that it might be flawed.
