🚨 The Story of AA – A Pentazocine Story Let me tell you the real story of AA, a 27-year-old guy I encountered last year. AA was a promising auto mechanic with a bright smile and big dreams. It all started innocently, he had a bad waist pain after a long day at the workshop. A “chemist” gave him Pentazocine injection (Forte) and he felt instant relief… plus an unexpected high and calmness he hadn’t felt before. Few weeks later, he was no longer using it for pain. He was using it to “feel normal.” He progressed from one ampoule to four, sometimes mixing it with other drugs. His arms became full of scars and abscesses. He hid from his family. What Pentazocine did to him: • He started having severe cravings and withdrawal symptoms (body pains, restlessness, insomnia, and aggression) whenever he tried to stop. • His veins got damaged, some collapsed completely, making injection difficult. • He developed repeated infections and abscesses that needed surgery. • He lost significant weight, became pale, and his breathing was sometimes shallow. • His mood swung wildly. Anxiety, depression, and hallucinations set in. • He dropped from a hardworking young man to someone who could steal tools from his workplace just to buy “Pent.” One day, his mother brought him to the hospital in a terrible state. That was when I met him as the pharmacist on duty. My Role as a Pharmacist: I didn’t just dispense drugs. Together with the doctor, we: • Counselled him and his family with empathy, not judgment. • Enrolled him in a substance abuse support program. • Recommended safer pain management alternatives (non-opioid options). • Worked with the team on gradual detoxification and supportive medications. • Educated his family on how to support him without enabling the addiction. Today, AA is in recovery. He still struggles some days, but he’s back to work, stronger and more aware. Fellow pharmacists, let us do better. Every time we dispense Pentazocine or other opioids without proper justification, we may be feeding someone’s future destruction. Let us counsel, verify prescriptions, refuse unnecessary dispensing, and report suspicious patterns. We are gatekeepers of medicines. If you or anyone you know is struggling with Pentazocine or any drug abuse, please seek help. Recovery is possible. Share this if it touched you. Someone out there may need to read Chinedu’s story. #DrugAbuseAwareness #Pentazocine #RecoveryIsPossible #PharmMaidoki #HealthTipsNG

Being positive is a mindset. It means you choose to respond in a manner that’s optimistic & constructive. You remember that the outcome could have been worse. It doesn’t mean you’re in denial; nor is life a bed of roses. Far from it. It means you’re grateful.

Yesterday we gathered for Yaakub Ira in front of ICE, who was abducted by ICE while covering Marwan Marouf’s abduction. Tonight we will gather for Salah Sarsour. All of them deserve our full advocacy. Yaakub’s mother was just diagnosed with cancer. Please don’t forget him.
