Foxes may be seen more frequently in our gardens now as mum fox, who has been confined to her den feeding her cubs round the clock for weeks, and relying on dad and other family members to bring her food, is finally free to go out and forage herself. Foxes are true omnivores, so as well as small rodents and insects, their diverse diet includes fruits and berries. So mum fox will eat varied foods, as well as taking some home to her babies in the den, so they experience a wide choice of nutrients and tastes. Just as we wean our babies by putting the food we eat in a food processor, to break it down and liquify it, so she will chew up and swallow the food she collects for them. When mum arrives home the excited cubs will lick at her lips, encouraging her to regurgitate her liquified meal for them. Here you can see these mums are enjoying some halved apples I put out for them (yes, you know those ones we all have in the fridge, bought in a spurt of 'healthy eating' shopping and have sat there ever since). One mum even prefers the apples to the Bonio biscuit! Apples and pears are good occasionally, but dry cat or dog food is a great staple food to leave out as it's a safe balanced meal for every garden visitor, and will help stop hungry mums raiding the hedgehog feeders.🥰

A hedgehog *out in the open* in the day is in serious trouble and needs urgent help. Always. No exceptions. Any size. Any time. Hedgehogs are nocturnal prey animals, they have no defences in the daytime, it's deadly dangerous for them. They are designed to hunt at night, to navigate and catch insects in the dark, occupying a specific ecological niche. They are not adapted to withstand high temperatures, and their shape means they would rapidly dehydrate during daylight hours. They are nocturnal animals. So they don't come out in the day simply because they're hungry, or lost, or disturbed, or to move nests, or for any other trivial reason. They come out in the day because it's warmer than the night and they are feeling cold. Deadly cold. They're feeling cold because they're so sick they're starting to die, and hypothermia is a stage of dying. Blood has been redirected to the vital organs, keeping them alive as long as possible, leaving the limbs feeling cold. If you see a hedgehog like this, out in the open, in the day time, no matter how 'well' he looks, it is an emergency. Please take them to a rescue (never a vet) URGENTLY.

Wild London David Attenborough I'm getting so many posts from lovely people absolutely outraged at the misinformation regarding hedgehogs and slugs presented on this show yesterday, so I'll just address it here. David Attenbourough is a really lovely man, and has done an immense amount of good for us, our wildlife, and our planet. But he, like any other TV presenter, relies on programme researchers for script content. The researchers, in turn, rely on who they *perceive to be* experts in the field. Unfortunately, they were taken in by some clever branding and chose the wrong people: A self-proclaimed 'hedgehog expert', often funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (see their most recent dangerous misinformation, and my response, published here:x.com/HedgehogCabin/…) And the London Wildlife Trust. Recently the London Wildlife Trust engaged me as an expert consultant on a 4 page spread article about hedgehog myths. Many of you have seen my interview, and the draft of the subsequent article. I was sent this draft (see 1st image below) for approval, to which I agreed. However, before going to print, an executive at London Wildlife trust decided to do some editing of his own. It's shocking, I know, and would be unbelievable, if not here in actual print. I've included two versions of the full article below: the first draft approved by me and the team at LWT, and the second actual printed version, after executive 'editing'. It was this same London Wildlife Trust who co-produced the Wild London documentary and "provided expert help and advice". So now you know. We're all shocked. But of course, as usual, it's the poor hedgehogs who will suffer. People won't provide food for our critically endangered hedgehogs, or bother keeping their garden natural and wild, now they've been told that hedgehogs eat slugs. After all, there's plenty of them to go round. Rescues all around the country, who are treating hedgehogs dying of lungworm from being forced through starvation into eating slugs, will feel so demoralised and invalidated. Like you, I'm furious, frustrated, and bone-wearily saddened.

We are delighted this morning to see the launch of the Government's new Animal Welfare Strategy which sets out new plans to protect pets, wildlife and farmed animals. The Strategy proposals include: 🐾 Reforming dog breeding practices to improve health and welfare and ending puppy farming 🐾 Consulting on a ban on the use of electric shock collars 🐾 Considering the introduction of licensing for animal rescue organisations 🐾 Promoting responsible dog ownership to protect public safety As always, the devil will be in the detail, but we are hugely encouraged by this positive action which addresses many of the issues and challenges we face as a a charity and have actively campaigned on over the last few years. We look forward to continung to engage with decision makers and responding to the consultations. Dogs like little Olwen, rescued from a puppy farm by Puppy Love and Hope Rescue, are depending on it.

Hedgehogs don't need houses, they can make their own.😊 What they need from us is food. Every hedgehog has to visit at least 20 gardens a night, every night, to get enough food to stay alive. That just isn't possible any more - either there is no access or the gardens have been decimated and left lifeless. So we need to help, and the ONLY safe food for hedgehogs is complete cat or dog food. Any type or flavour, as long as meat is the first listed ingredient. Dry kitten food is perfect. A dish of food and a dish of clean water put out each evening will be a life saver. Be patient, and if there are still hedgehogs left alive in your area they will find you. Eventually, when they come to trust you as a reliable source of good food, they may want to more closer, to save energy - that's when one may choose to live in a house you provide.🥰

Fireworks. Just don't. Please. It's so cruel. Stress kills wildlife. Please choose, and teach your children, kindness. We have so many ways of entertaining ourselves which don't involve the suffering and death of animals. 🔊

This poor collapsed boy is baby Miller. Found laying out on the lawn in the morning by a couple who provide water and mealworms for their birds. Our hedgehogs are starving. Mealworms are lethal to hedgehogs. A diet of mealworms or other bird food will deform growing joints in hedgehogs, and make their bones thin and easily broken, resulting in an agonising death. But we've destroyed the hedgehog's natural habitat, along with their natural food of caterpillars and beetles, so they are forced to survive on anything they can find. Please clear away any bird food before dusk, and provide some dry kitten/cat food for your nocturnal visitors, to help keep them healthy and safe. Any type, as long as meat is the first listed ingredient. Dry kitten food is perfect. Poor baby Miller is in intensive care, receiving fluids, potent pain relief and drugs to keep him alive long enough to heal. His prognosis is bleak, but there is a hope. Please help make the world a little safer for all the little Millers out there. If you feed the birds, do so in the morning only, then take the feeders in so they can forage naturally the rest of the day. That way the ground will be clear and safe by the time the hedgehogs wake up.

Halloween artificial cobweb material: It may be a bit of fake fun for you, but it's a very real and terrifying death for them. And it's not only birds. I've had my first call of the season of a hedgehog trapped in this horrific fake 'cobweb', made especially for gullible halloweeners to spread over their greenery, trapping all unsuspecting birds, insects and mammals, including hedgehogs. The fine synthetic fibers are difficult for animals to see and can quickly wrap around their legs, spines, and neck, leading to severe injuries. When a hedgehog struggles to free herself the web tightens, cutting off circulation and causing deep wounds. These constriction injuries often lead to permanent damage or death. Unfortunately the call was from Manchester, so all I could do was talk them through getting the poor creature to a rescue. Clearly she had been trapped there for at least one night, and her struggles had pulled the strong nylon strands so tightly that one of her toes had been amputated. Can you imagine the pain and the sheer terror? And then seeing dawn approach, while hanging there, tightly bound and helpless. Aside from being stressed, dehydrated, starving and exhausted to the point of near death, she also had horrific bite/peck wounds to her face, where she had been held there, helpless, unable to curl and defend herself, while a predator tried to eat her alive. If you have used this deadly cruel trap to 'decorate' your garden, please take it down now. Please don't be conned by the greedy makers and sellers of this rubbish into hurting defenceless animals.

Sometimes words alone aren't enough. The calls just keep coming, the suffering continues, and this needs to be made abundantly clear: ANY hedgehog out in the open in the day is seriously ill and needs to be taken *to a rescue*, never a vet, urgently. You CAN NOT just keep them. I take phone calls every single day from people who have seen a hedgehog out in the day (mostly babies this time of year) and have taken them in and 'cared for' them, and are ringing me 2 or 3 days later asking why they aren't moving any more, or are crying. Typically, a lady who called this morning saw a baby hedgehog out in the day yesterday, covered in flies. She said she picked the fly eggs off and kept this baby in a nice warm box but is worried today that he seems sluggish. That's because he was already deathly ill and in terrible pain when she found him. The flies knew he was close to death so they laid their eggs on him, so that when the maggots hatched they'd have a nice fresh meal. And, as I explained to this lady, that's exactly what they would be doing now - the eggs she didn't see, in his ears, eyes, nose, mouth and genitals - would be eating him alive now, from the inside. He would be in agony. Flies are capable of forcing inside the as yet unopened eyelids of babies and laying eggs there. The damage the maggots do when they hatch is catastrophic. It really is critical that there is no ambiguity about this: If you see a hedgehog out in the open in the day, grab her, then ring a good rescue who will ask all the right questions and triage the situation, and give you advice. Below are two images of the same baby hedgehog, ten minutes apart. The photo is as she was admitted, looking cute and fine, with all the visible fly eggs picked off. The video is the same baby after I'd applied a substance that irritates maggots and makes them come out from inside their victim's bodily orifices. The substance is very toxic and must be very carefully and sparingly applied by a knowledgeable and experienced rescue. This little girl was treated successfully and is now thriving; growing so well she may even be able to be released back to the wild to hibernate this year. She's a lucky one, as she was brought to the right place. Many aren't this lucky and die horribly. I beg you, please be their ambulance, not their jailor.
