Parliamentarians are recognizing what clinicians, experts, and people with lived experience have warned for years: the assurances that MAiD for mental illness can be implemented safely are not evidence-based.
An indefinite pause to this legislation is important, but Canada must focus on strengthening safeguards, oversight, and transparency in MAiD, and go even further by repealing Track 2.

@mssinenomine Don’t know the other two but I’m sure it’s terrible. Those inclined to revel in crummy henchman behaviour, if convinced they are on the right side of history, will do what crummy henchmen do.

This is one of the worst pieces of writing I’ve read on MAiD. The problem the committee is having isn’t “imbalance”, it’s that they just want to outright ignore perspectives that are critical of the MAiD regime, and that’s be becoming harder for them.

Media were fed a narrative by MAiD advocate Jocelyn Downie (probably with aid from professional lobbyists) & they are really running with it.

WATCH: A reporter vents about the assisted suicide committee mostly inviting medical experts opposed to expanding the controversial procedure. Justice Minister Sean Fraser says it's not his role to "police" which witnesses committee members choose to hear from.

@d08890 Damn this looks familiar. What was it?

@mssinenomine This is a great way of putting the regulatory capture point for people who really need things to be spelled out because they have no imagination and simply can't seem to fathom how unruly the practice is.

NEW The Globe Editorial Board: The guardrails of MAID need vigilant scrutiny
None of this "has happened for the Ontario coroner’s death-review committee for long-term care – but it has for the committee for medical assistance in death, or MAID."

“Stats from the MAiD Death Review Committee reveal that track two cases reflect high social vulnerability and untreated mental illness,” said Ramona Coelho (@rljcoelho), senior fellow at MLI as she testified yesterday in the Senate at the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying.
