@SpaceKoala I guess they had a model that made "light booms" like sonic booms.

The funny thing is that you don't even need relativity to realize the spin drives couldn't go faster than the speed of light. Even in the old aether model the observed speed of light would drop towards zero as you approached the speed of light, so the spin drive shouldn't push you past it.

I just realized Eridians probably never calculated the speed of light and thought the periodic table ended at uranium.

#projecthailmary While Grace must have thought his request to teach Eridian children science to be treated as a novelty. Unbeknowst to Grace, the admission for the classes was fierce! Those who entered Savior Grace's classes were to become the cutting edge of Erid's science

@SpaceKoala @LIM49Spartan Well yes but I am pretty sure speed of light has been measured some time before einstein (also it took a genius to figure it out in one go), I think they are probably in the middle of figuring out relativity. Hell they might have figured it out while rocky was away for 47 years.

@JustSpaceStuff1 @LIM49Spartan They might not. The speed of light is so much faster than the speed of sound they might have just assumed it was effectively instantaneous. The problem is that realizing that light had a fixed speed is specifically what led to special relativity.

@SpaceKoala @LIM49Spartan Another thought, is that they had to have had a observation of all the local stars to realise tau ceti was not dimming. And had the astronomical distance ladder out to the tau ceti. They calculated the distance to tau ceti correctly. You can do a lot with newtonion mechanics.

@LIM49Spartan As I recall they didn't know about special or general relativity, but they did know light existed once they built their space towers. What powers stars must have been an incredible mystery to them. Honestly makes me wonder if they had even invented spectroscopy.

@KenKirtland17 @SciGuySpace @SpcPlcyOnline @NASASpox I kinda support this but only if landing on an equatorial landing site actually improves the launch window availability both from earth and from the moon. since the the current Orion lunar orbit plan still needs a long time for a lander to dock with Orion in case of an emergency

I was wondering about this. When you say "we are challenging every requirement" it makes sense to look at this one. Frankly I am team land on the south pole. Changing that to equitorial would be easier, but imo that becomes too space race, beat the chinese centric. Still I could see an argument that the first landing is more about learning how to land / do a lunar surface mission in this day and age, and even if it weren't on the south pole it would probably be worth while.

FYI I've been hearing murmurings that NASA is seriously considering a non-polar landing for Artemis IV. @SpcPlcyOnline also had an intriguing story about a month ago (linked below). Anyway, I asked NASA about it this week and got a firm denial from @NASASpox: “NASA is still planning to land Artemis IV on the lunar South Pole. Any assertions otherwise are false.” Perhaps it really was being seriously considered at one point, and now isn't. Perhaps it never was. I believe they still could change things up if it makes a 2028 landing more feasible. We'll see. Here's Marcia's earlier story: spacepolicyonline.com/news/kshatriya…

@Jack_Frodo Yeah reading Wikipedia articles about it is surreal for some reason. Not to mention Canada with the crewed ride-share skip in moon missions.

can you believe the list of people who have been to (or around) the moon is no longer just apollo astronauts?

@JL7612 @Cosmic_Penguin lol, I don't know what Issacman's actual beliefs are (right now he's saying whatever he needs to say to get funding) but even if he wanted to, no way that the current congress and admin would allow that. China would probably be up for that though cause it makes them look good.

@Cosmic_Penguin I understand the direction you're going in, but taking the response literally for a moment I was thinking of the possibility of CNSA outright offering Lanyue for the Artemis 3 mission's other half and tried imagining how Isaacman would've reacted lol.

@KenKirtland17 I have heard some people call it that, but most people call it "the Artemis 2" when they are referring to the spacecraft not the mission🫤

@bountydue @dpoddolphinpro there was apparently some water leaks/spills earlier, the issue was fixed. but the water is still inside I think so they said they needed to suck the water into a urine bag before TLI

@dpoddolphinpro I jumped into the stream and caught the end of them talking about something to do with transferring a liquid with a syringe into a bag needing 2 pairs of hands. Can someone explain what I'm missing please? I thought the toilet was a solved issue.

@KenKirtland17 i am no expert but the imu kept showing ~1.6 m/s2 acceleration and looked like it kept updating after the "landing", so worst case scenario is probably not landing right side up.

Trying not to doomer but the abrupt program cutoff with no word on lander health doesn't bode well. Couple that with the fast appearing descent and the flipped over lander graphic...

@KenKirtland17 I don't think spacex is gonna be flying a hls starship and dearmoon at the same time, so it would have be artemis 5, so guess its possible. Hell by that time china could make a lunar flyby.

It would be cool if dearMoon coincides with an Artemis mission. We could have 13 all at once people around the moon at some point this decade. Odds may be low but would be awesome. Combine that number with all the astros in LEO and it would surely be a record!

i doubt this will be a servicing mission, Dragon doesn't have the infrastructure to capture it and have astronauts service it. but perhaps they will go and do some observations of Hubble to get a better understanding of its condition for a potential starship servicing mission?
