Yesterday’s meeting with the Minister of Electricity and Eskom focused on agreeing on the key principles necessary to keep the electricity supply stable across Johannesburg. We have made promises to Eskom, and those promises will be kept. Residents can rest assured that there will be no power outages, especially during the winter when demand peaks. There are more complex structural and technical challenges that still need ongoing discussions between the technical teams to find long-term solutions. Nonetheless, Johannesburg is not going to face a blackout. That simply won't happen.

The City of Johannesburg has today disconnected several properties in the inner city due to persistent non-payment of municipal accounts. The affected properties include Berea Mews Body Corporate with an outstanding balance of R10,488,392.85, Cont Body of Medelin Court with an outstanding balance of R49,088,327.36, Beatrice Lane with an outstanding balance of R11,903,210.02, and The Controlling Body Parkview with an outstanding balance of R15,937,438.47. These properties have failed to honour their obligations to the City despite benefiting from municipal services. The outstanding amounts relate to unpaid property rates, electricity, water, refuse removal and other municipal levies. The City of Johannesburg will continue intensifying its revenue collection drive to protect the financial sustainability of the municipality and ensure fair payment for services rendered. Residents, body corporates and property owners are urged to settle their municipal accounts to avoid disconnections, legal action and further enforcement measures.
