@Josiah_B_Bates @justin_perdue Repent and believe’ is law in what it commands, but gospel in how it’s fulfilled. God commands it, and then grants it. The call exposes our need; grace supplies the response. Brings to mind the Augustine quote: “Give what You command, and command what You will.”

Yesterday I preached on Jesus and the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16-30: “Are You Good Enough?” This encounter is often misunderstood as a model gospel presentation. But Jesus did not affirm the rich young ruler’s claim that he had kept all the commandments (v. 20), as though he simply needed one more obedience to enter the kingdom. That’s why Jesus gave him the severe command to “sell what you possess and give to the poor.” He was exposing the man’s failure to “be perfect” (v. 21) by pressing the law to love your neighbor as yourself and to not covet (v. 19). So the ruler walked away, not from the gospel per se, but from the true demands of the law and confessing his own sin - he was too "good" for that. This encounter should not be preached primarily as gospel or as a test of faith, but as law. I would highly recommend you meditate on the meaning of these words; "having a form of godliness, but denying its power"... (2 Tim 3:5) Was Peter naive in writing the following? Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

"Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law" - Rom 13:8 Was Paul wasting his breath when he exhorted the Romans to do the above? Did he not get the memo that imputation had set him free from the command? How about when he says: "But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life" - 1 Tim 4:8 Is this fighting the good fight of faith to LAY HOLD on eternal life, i.e., fleeing evil and pursuing righteousness etc. tantamount to imputed righteousness? Reflect on these questions. They will free you from dead religion and lead you to life.

He would have noticed this pesky little detail about Heb 12:14, that it begins with "make every effort", unquestionably linking effort to ethical holiness.
