Today, I mourn the passing of my friend and former colleague, Eliot Engel. Eliot carried an unmistakable kindness. In a place that moves quickly, he always made time for people. That stayed with me. We worked together to advance the U.S.-Mexico Commission, a bipartisan effort to strengthen coordination and reduce violence along the border. Eliot approached that work the same way he approached everything, with care, seriousness, and a belief that all people deserve respect. He loved the Bronx, and he never let you forget it. In the way someone talks about home when it shaped him for life. I’ll remember fondly his love of his community, his deep commitment to public service, and his unwavering decency. I pray his family finds comfort in the difficult days ahead. May his memory forever be a blessing.
