In August 1989, a 23-year-old Canadian hockey player stopped for a few days of snowboarding in Austria before starting his new job. He was never seen alive again. Fourteen years later, a snow grooming machine operator found a glove sticking out of a melting glacier. Duncan MacPherson was a first round NHL draft pick, selected 20th overall by the New York Islanders in 1984. He never made it to the NHL, plagued by injuries, but had accepted a player-coach role with the Dundee Tigers in Scotland. He was last seen on August 9, 1989, taking a ski lift on the Stubaier Glacier in Austria. When he failed to arrive in Scotland, his parents began searching. The mystery deepened immediately when they were told his rented snowboard and boots had been returned to the resort. If he had returned them, where had he gone? His borrowed red Opel Corsa was found six weeks later in a resort parking lot with his passport still inside. His parents spent the next fourteen years and most of their savings travelling to Austria seven times searching for answers. Austrian authorities offered little help. The family accused Austrian authorities of a cover-up and eventually took the case to the European Court of Human Rights. In 2003, a snow grooming machine operator discovered his body frozen in the glacier, right beside an active ski slope, not in a remote crevasse as authorities had always suggested. The rented snowboard he had supposedly returned was still strapped to him, broken in two. A Canadian forensic anthropologist concluded the injuries were consistent with MacPherson being struck by a snowcat grooming machine, and that rather than reporting it, the driver buried him in a shallow crevasse where the glacier preserved his body for fourteen years. His mother's response when the body was found: "Did he get buried alive? You might think that it doesn't matter, but you know what? It does." His de*th remains officially unsolved.
