@scottiebateman Know how you feel, slightly, I flew from LHR to NRT, left London at 0800hrs had breakfast when in level flight, had lunch a few hours later, plus some wine, chilled for a while, only to be woken by the lovely cabin crew serving me breakfast 😢.

But in reality, it’s a constant negotiation with biology. Your circadian rhythm doesn’t care about your rosters. It wants darkness when it’s dark, food when it’s familiar, and sleep when it’s consistent. Long-haul crew live in a world where breakfast might happen at 02:00, and it’s a curry, daylight arrives twice in one “day,” and your body is never entirely sure which continent it’s on, even when you’re at home. Managing that isn’t accidental. For me, it’s been about discipline and intent: • Protecting sleep like it’s fuel. • Moving every day, even when I don’t feel like it. • Being deliberate about food instead of reactive to time zones. • Accepting that consistency beats intensity. Two years ago, I decided I wanted to feel better at 35,000 feet as well as on the ground. Since then, I’ve dropped 84lbs, not through shortcuts, but through sustainable habits built around a life that doesn’t run on a normal clock. Aviation teaches us risk management. Health management is no different. Small margins, managed consistently, compound over time. Hong Kong tonight. Another time zone. Same principles. It’s guess the fire station!

I recall playing on bomb sites in East London, around the docks. Quite often one of us kids would find a UXB, usually an incendiary bomb. At school we were told to take them to the local police station 😂, no H&S rules then.
