Being a new doctor is difficult. Being good at being a new doctor is astoundingly and extraordinarily difficult.

Told my attending today he made working with 6-0 suture look so easy. He said “you know what’s different about us? About 5,000 or more mistakes”. Other interns like me that might be feeling incompetent more than they’d like, gentle reminder: that’s the way it’s supposed to be.

“Professionalism” is subjective & influenced by the dominant culture. I also still wear big hoop earrings, very similar to ones I wore as a preteen. These tokens are often the only piece of ourselves that we can keep with us as we navigate PWIs.

It's hard to keep a positive attitude on busy inpatient services and I'm working on it too. Everyone in the hospital is under 2-3x more social and cognitive stress than they're willing to admit. But it still matters how we treat each other.

Recalling a kiddo I saw weeks ago who presented with DKA. I ran through the 5 I's of DKA triggers in my head, ready to figure out his why. Houseless & with no fridge, his insulin was left to go bad in the car. No fancy ddx - just a reminder that housing is healthcare.

Normalize the knowledge that just one accepting adult can reduce suicide attempts in LGBTQ+ teens by 40% or more - be that accepting and supportive adult.💖🦄🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
