Latest @daera_ni figures show that last year we exported over 305,350 tonnes of non-recyclable (RDF) waste from NI across Europe where it fuelled energy from waste plants there instead of here. All because we don’t have sufficient modern waste infrastructure to manage our own waste and maximise its value locally. This is simply unsustainable and a high-risk strategy that has to change. This tells an incomplete story of Northern Ireland waste. Waste arisings are up, recycling has plateaued, landfill is down and energy recovery is up. What is missing is that the vast majority of our energy recovery is achieved via volatile/unreliable waste export markets due to lack of local infrastructure. This is not economically or environmentally sustainable.
