The Buy More, his lack of trying with women, etc. That's why the show is so good- it shows him working through these issues, and eventually putting in the hard work

And he does take what seems to be the easy way out when another woman finds him attractive. With Hannah, we can also add in a little dose of over-compensating swagger.

Also he was not as confident yet in himself.

I think it's him not holding out for something he doesn't think will happen, and trying to find joy
