When we appointed Flick, one of the players I expected to benefit the most was Balde. And it wasn’t just me, there was a strong narrative at the time that Flick would unlock him the same way he did with Davies, but the reality has been underwhelming tbh. It’s not that Balde hasn’t shown anything, in fact last season, from around December/January until his injury, we probably saw the best version of him so far. He looked more confident, more decisive, and even his output got better. The real issue is the constant cycle. Every time he starts building momentum, showing improvement, and hitting good form, he gets injured… and everything resets. Rhythm, confidence, development, all gone, and he has to start over again.
