In some places, funerals have quietly become competitions. One family kills three cows to honour their mother. Another kills four cows days later, perhaps to show they loved theirs more or could afford more. Somewhere along the line, grief became performance and mourning became a display of status. It makes me wonder: how did we get here? What happens to the elderly man or woman whose children are struggling financially? Do they grow old worrying not about death itself, but about whether their burial will be considered "worthy"? Should anyone have to carry that burden? When did the value of a life become measured by the number of cows slaughtered after death rather than the impact made while alive? Traditions deserve respect, but traditions that create pressure, debt, competition, and anxiety for the living deserve honest conversations too.
