I want to remind people that every country has its own culture and historical background. Please don’t assume that your own experiences define what is natural or normal. Respect other countries’ cultures, and don’t judge others based on your own standards.

At the same time, I hope people in the other continent can understand that many East Asians simply haven’t grown up with the same historical and cultural context. Sometimes people are genuinely unaware rather than intentionally trying to disrespect other ethnic groups.

I’m going to step away from this discussion about skin color now and go back to using this account for what I originally intended—supporting my favorite artists. Before I leave, though, I’d like to share one last thought as someone from East Asia.

@haamichn @Hellgguk737 I’ve never heard that half of Chinese people have dark skin. Is that information accurate? I think you should fact-check it. I mean, my skin is darker than that of my East Asian friends, but in this context, I don’t think I would be considered dark-skinned.

@haamichn @Hellgguk737 I’m talking about East Asia, not Southeast Asia, so please read my comment carefully. East Asia is made up of populations that are largely ethnically homogeneous. That’s why some people in East Asia may find dark-skinned foreigners unfamiliar at first.

As East Asia has become more connected to the rest of the world through globalization, people have become more aware of concepts such as colorism and why practices like blackface are considered offensive. Mistakes can still happen because these discussions are new to many people

My point is not that discrimination never exists in East Asia. Rather, I want people to understand that the preference for lighter skin in East Asia is generally viewed as a beauty standard, not as a belief that darker-skinned people are inherently inferior.

I don’t like sharing much about myself online, so I mainly use this account to follow my favorite boys. However, I sometimes feel exhausted trying to explain how East Asian societies are often misunderstood, especially regarding colorism.
