The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), through Secretary General Seth Panyako, has announced that there will be no work at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Monday. Speaking to journalists in Kisumu on April 12, he said “there will be no work” at the facility over delayed salaries, unpaid pensions, and prolonged casual employment of nurses, raising concerns over possible disruption of services at the country’s largest referral hospital. The Court has officially adopted the Return to Work Agreements for Machakos and Kajiado Counties, elevating them to binding Court Orders. As such, the Union urges immediate and full compliance from the respective County Governments.

As a Union representing all Nurses and Midwives across the Country, we demand an independent investigation into hospital management and immediate staffing reforms. Safety for patients requires safe working conditions for nurses and midwives. 🩺

While we mourn the loss of life, we must address the systemic failures that make such tragedies inevitable. The tragic maternal death at Kenyenya Sub-County Hospital was a failure of the system, not the nurse on duty. The facts are outlined in the letter attached below.
