@Airborn_Eevee @planefag Ah, so only the 127mm cannons. You could definitely get some good effects against drones with such weapons but outside some insane revolution in gunnery they are very much secondary weapons now compared to missiles.

@KPAWeapons @planefag All that's true, but this is a discussion about Battery-caliber flak. Not Yamato's overall lackluster AA as a whole.

An explosion of "cheap" drone technology makes biplane-speed targets a "modern" threat that dual-purpose 127mm guns firing proximity-fused ammo are ideally suited to counter. It is 2026. @Airborn_Eevee @planefag I’m not even considering those as they didn’t produce any real effect but rather the inadequate 25mm triple and the relatively ok at best twin 127mm Type 89 guns. They had no fire directors, poorly made light AA, and effectively no FCS for these guns.

@KPAWeapons @planefag I'm not even talking about her final battle here. And even so, the fact of the matter is that those airburst "Beehive" shells even under ideal conditions weren't very effective.

@Airborn_Eevee @planefag Note, Yamato had a small escort, a weak and remarkable poorly made AA battery and was attacked by 6 enemy aircraft carriers. Swap those for BBs and the telling bit here is that you don’t win against 6v1 odds vs enemy capital ships.

@planefag "Ideally suited to counter" Yeahhhhhh No. Yamato already proved that main battery AAA was more of a suggestion rather than a real threat to aircraft. The age of the battleship, unlike tanks, is genuinely over. Our needs have simply changed, something we learned in the 60s.

Given the interest in the North Korean MANPADS launched by Hezbollah recently, I thought I'd share photos obtained by @smallarmssurvey of MANPADS found in a DPRK shipment interdicted in Bangkok in 2009. Documentation found w/the MANPADS identify the systems as 'SA-18S' (1/ )

@nonnbirinavy I figure that the T-68s are on the chopping block for when they get the new tanks properly issued to units. Though since they have 1000 left I figure the hulls could be repurposed for other purposes.

@nonnbirinavy I am surprised they've never had much interest in an IFV of any kind outside maybe some BTR-80A (for a given value of IFV)

New North Korean anti-tank missile being launched. The missile itself is extremely similar to the FGM-148 Javelin and bears almost no resemblance to the HJ-12, which would be a Chinese analogue to the Javelin. It is possible that some Javelins captured from Ukraine were transferred to North Korean forces, Therefore, reverse engineering would be possible.
