Everyone loves a Robin 🥰 It just take awhile to surrender to it sometimes. 💗💗 “For the first time since he’d met Robin, Strike had no interest in pursuing a separate sexual relationship as a distraction from and a sublimation of any inconvenient feelings he might have for his partner.” ‘’This is really kind of you, Prudence,’ Robin said, as the therapist led her upstairs. ‘It isn’t,’ said Prudence, now smiling again. ‘I’ve been dying to meet you, given that you’re clearly the most important person in Corm’s life.’ The words gave Robin a sensation like an electric shock in the pit of her stomach. ‘He’s – he’s really important to me, too.’’ #TheRunningGrave “When a man is forced to recognise that, in spite of his best efforts to prevent it happening, he’s fallen in love with the woman with whom he’s built a thriving business, and who he considers his best friend; when that woman has been in a stable, happy relationship with another man for over a year; when the first man knows he risks both business and friendship if he makes an open avowal of his feelings, yet has decided he doesn’t want to live with the knowledge that he might have had what he wanted if only he’d spoken, then that man must determine how, when and where the long-resisted discussion is to take place. Strike had been mulling over this problem ever since he’d made his first sober attempt to breach the barriers he himself had erected between himself and Robin Ellacott, by telling her that Charlotte had been certain he was in love with his business partner, and had mentioned the fact in her suicide note.” #TheHallmarkedMan #CormoranStrike #RobinEllacott

Robins, with their fiery red breasts and bright, joyous presence through the darkest months, quickly became symbols of Christmas cheer 🍒❄️ In Victorian times, postmen were nicknamed “robins” thanks to their bright red uniforms and before long, the Robin itself began to appear on Christmas greeting cards, delivering tiny splashes of joyous colour and a little hope amidst the cold of Winter🎄🪶

@GingerBriq Robin and Strike are great. Troubled Blood is a great novel because it’s all-encompassing - even the heroine and hero have a blazing row - thanks for sharing!

Tears prickled in Robin’s eyes. Angling her umbrella so that Strike couldn’t see her face, she blinked hard until her eyes were clear again. They walked across a cobbled courtyard in silence until Robin came to a sudden halt. Strike, who never enjoyed navigating uneven surfaces with his prosthesis, wasn’t sorry to pause, but he was slightly worried that he was about to be on the receiving end of an outburst. #TroubledBlood This gorgeous painting: EVA CZARNIECKA ART evaart.net/products/walki…

Strike was beside her, large and solid and real, and only now did it occur to her what would have become of her had he not been there, in spite of her absolute certainty that he was waiting. ‘This is it,’ said Strike five minutes later, as he pulled up in a dark car park. As Strike turned off the engine, Robin undid her seat belt, half rose from her seat, threw her arms around him, buried her face in his shoulder and burst into tears. ‘Thank you.’ ‘’S all right,’ said Strike, putting his arms around her and speaking into her hair. ‘My job, innit… you’re out,’ he added quietly, ‘you’re OK now…’ ‘I know,’ sobbed Robin. ‘Sorry… sorry…’ Both were in very inconvenient positions in which to hug, especially as Strike still had his seat belt on, but neither let go for several long minutes. Strike gently rubbed Robin’s back, and she held him in a tight grip, occasionally apologising while his shirt collar grew wet. Instead of recoiling when he pressed his lips to the top of her head, she tightened her hold on him. ‘It’s all right,’ he kept saying. ‘It’s OK.’ #TheRunningGrave

Robin was certainly having a torrid time through most of #TheHallmarkedMan she definitely needed a Strike hug after her experience in Harrods! Doesn’t stop her doing the job though. ❤️ Robin carries on to meet Albie in the Alfred Tennyson pub - a wonderful venue if you get a chance do visit! Later in the book Robin is watching Albie in The Sun in Splendour- Kim takes over from her and doesn’t do such a great job. 😡 You certainly can’t miss The Sun in Splendour though! “Today, Harrods’ windows were displaying the usual range of designer goods in snowy settings and, on stepping inside, Robin found herself immersed in a sumptuous Christmas fantasy where, if you walked the halls long enough, with their lavish, twinkling decorations, you might be tempted to believe that you, too, could stage a holiday of high glamour and luxury for your loved ones, at least until you started checking price tags.”……… “At long last, after two and a half hours of solid searching, Robin found Albie Simpson-White in the sports department on the fourth floor, where he was standing close to a life-size fibreglass horse, assisting a mother and her teenaged daughter to find the correct size of riding breeches.”………. “The Alfred Tennyson was crowded, but they were able to secure a table for two in the restaurant area. Robin slid into the seat with her back to the wall; nobody else was going to approach her from behind, unseen, if she could help it. Albie, who seemed torn between pleasure at the prospect of a decent hot meal after a long day at work and worry about what was coming, ordered a burger and a pint, then sat, slightly hunched, with his hands between his knees.”……… “Albie got off the Tube at Notting Hill Gate station, and Robin followed him up Pembridge Road and round a corner, where he entered a pub called the Sun in Splendour, which had a curved, bright yellow frontage. Robin texted Kim her location, then entered the pub to see Albie sitting alone at a table, drinking a pint.” #TheHallmarkedMan #RobinEllacott #CormoranStrike

November 12th On This Day In #Strike & #Ellacott I thoroughly recommend a re-read of Chapter 12 of #TheRunningGrave. Strike leaves his sister Lucy's house after telling her about Chapman Farm and having the most honest and revealing conversation he's probably ever had with her. "Strike was a mentally resilient man who’d survived plenty of reverses in his life, not least the loss of part of his right leg. One of the tools of self-discipline he’d forged in youth and honed in the army was a habit of compartmentalisation that rarely failed him, but right now, it wasn’t working." As is his want, he sits and vapes and drinks Scotch. He's angry with his mother and has the sort of "conversation" in his head with her that's usually reserved for Charlotte. "You knew I wanted order, and boundaries, and a life without endless fucking mess. If you hadn’t been what you were, maybe I wouldn’t be what I am. Maybe I’m reaping what you sowed, so don’t you fucking laugh at the army, or me, you with your paedophile mates and the squatters and the junkies…" He broods on Charlotte's struggles with her mental health and at last rumours & speculation in previous books are confirmed. "Charlotte ... was profoundly unhappy, and Strike suspected he was the only person who truly knew the depths of her misery. The surface of Charlotte’s life might look glamorous and easy ... but her real value to the gossip columns was her instability. There were several suicide attempts in Charlotte’s past, and a long history of psychiatric evaluations." Rather like Robin in The Old Library pub in #TroubledBlood, he makes a thorough examination of his situation and feelings. "Strike was well aware that Lucy, and some of his friends, believed him trapped perpetually in the shadow cast by those two dark caryatids, Leda and Charlotte. They wanted him to stride out into the sunlight, free at last, to find a less complicated woman, and a love untainted by pain. But what was a man supposed to do if he thought he might finally be ready to do that, and it was too late?" Someone give him a hug!!! 🥹 So he does what he does best and immerses himself in potential leads and information, whilst continuing to drink Scotch, and, much like Strike in the aftermath of Robin's wedding feels the need to talk to his business partner and best mate. " ... he’d occasionally called Robin at home, while she was still married. Those calls, he knew, had sometimes caused trouble, given Matthew’s resentment of his wife’s growing dedication to the job. It was Saturday night: Robin and Murphy might be at a restaurant, or the bloody theatre again. Strike took another swig of whisky, and pressed Robin’s number." Their chat soothes his turmoil, but then TP Murphy turns up. "It’s Saturday night,’ said Robin. ‘Take a break. No!’ she added, laughing, and he assumed this was directed at Murphy, whose laughter he could also hear. ‘Sorry,’ she said again. ‘No problem, I’ll let you go,’ he said, as she had earlier, and before she could reply, he hung up. Thoroughly irritated at himself, Strike slapped his laptop closed and got up to examine the contents of his healthily stocked fridge. As he took out a packet of what he was starting to think of as ‘more fucking fish’ to check the sell-by date, his mobile rang." Exit, pursued by Bijou
